Biography
The Beginning (32-21 years BBY)
Bred and raised on Kamino to be part of the Grand Army of the Republic, Kaden’Dha Runi started life as Alpha-99, the last of the Alpha-class ARC troopers to be created and trained by Jango Fett.
Alpha-99 enjoyed those training years and absorbed Jango’s lessons with a fervor and determination that made him second to none. However, he couldn’t help but feel that he was just a little bit different. He felt as though Jango’s lessons about what a Mandalorian is and the Mandalorian culture were directed towards him in particular. He took these lessons to heart. He believed that more Mando blood was coursing through his veins than through his brother’s, even though he knew that was scientifically impossible.
Alpha-99 distinguished himself in ARC training and learned all he could from Jango Fett. He especially carried the heart of a true Mandalorian within him.
The Rebirth ( 22-19 years BBY )
For 2 years, Alpha-99 served with distinction within the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). He went on countless dangerous missions, and fought alongside several Jedi generals. He led his squads into many battles, and excelled at living up to the image of a Mandalorian that Jango Fett had instilled in him. As other clones had begun to take names for themselves, Alpha-99 decided against it. Jango Fett called him Alpha-99 and to honor Jango, Alpha-99 would not allow his name to change.
One day, Alpha-99 caught word of a rumor running through the ranks. A rumor about the man who gave him his direction in life, Jango Fett. Alpha-99 learned that Jango Fett had lost his life at the outset of the Clone Wars, at the Battle of Geonosis. What was more disturbing to Alpha-99 was that it was being told that a Jedi named Mace Windu had killed Jango.
While all the ARC troopers felt a pain over hearing of Jango Fett’s death,
Alpha-99 took it extremely hard. Jango was the man who taught him all he knew. Taught him not only about battle, survival, and how to live in the galaxy, but he was also the man who taught Alpha-99 what he was fighting for, what life was about, what it was worth living for. Jango Fett was the closest thing to a father Alpha-99 was ever going to have.
He wrestled with the weight of serving in an army where one of it’s leaders was responsible for the death of his father figure. He questioned how he could go on serving under leaders who were associated with the murderer of Jango Fett.
For almost a year, Alpha-99 began taking on more and more dangerous missions. He continued to serve the GAR because he vowed he would not disgrace Jango’s honor as the Null ARCs did by leaving the service to follow Kal Skirata back to Mandalore, at least that was the rumor, but a part of him no longer wanted to serve the Jedi, and the only honorable way out was to die in service.
On a particularly dangerous mission behind enemy lines, towards the end of the war, Alpha-99 and his squad was ambushed. The firefight that ensued was catastrophic. When the blaster bolts ceased and the smoke had cleared, the Separatist forces were destroyed, but the entire squad, except for Alpha-99 lay dead or dying. Alpha-99 called in for support and a medical evacuation for his men. As he listened intently to his radio, he heard the order from the commanding Jedi to the communications officer,
“…the squad was behind enemy lines on a black ops mission. The entire squad is MIA and presumed dead…”
The communications were disconnected. That was that. Alpha-99 had just learned that to the Jedi, and the GAR, he, and all the other clones, were expendable pieces of equipment. Alpha-99 died on that day. Finally, he could be reborn. Reborn as a true Mandalorian. He took a new name, Kaden’Dha Runi, “Angry, Dark Soul” in Mando’a, and made his way to safer ground.
Plying the Trade ( 18-2 years BBY )
The first thing Kaden’Dha Runi did, after “acquiring” a small starship, was modify his kit to resemble something a little more Mandalorian. He then went into business for himself as a bounty hunter. His own distaste for people, and fear of his true identity ever being found out, forced him to keep to the small backwater planets of the galaxy.
At first he took on any job he could find so he could earn enough credits to buy a decent ship for his new trade. Once he had a good starship, Kaden’Dha became a little more discriminate in his work choices. He preferred to check the Empire’s “wanted list” and hunt for the Jedi that seemed to have escaped the purge. His vengeance wanted Mace Windu, but with Windu having been killed by Vader, Kaden’Dha would try to sate his appetite with any Jedi he could find.
This unsatisfied vengeance lead him to dark places, and he would often be found in the cantinas and saloons drinking his pain and demons away. Pain over having been abandoned by the one thing he was raised to believe in, the GAR, and his demons of bloodlust vengeance. Often times he would spend his earnings on a barrel of ale, and go back to his ship only to awake with a headache. The demons he quieted the night before, were, yet again, wide awake and tearing at his soul.
For more than 15 years, Kaden’Dha Runi lived his life hunting the scum of the galaxy, on the worst cesspool planets. He spent his money on equipment and ale. Always improving his skills, but never finding any peace.
Going Home for the First Time ( 1 year BBY - 3 years ABY )
After 15 years of not finding peace, Kaden’Dha Runi heard word of a resistance movement against the Empire’s control on Mandalore. A planet he always considered his home but had never been to. With years going by without any news of “wanted Jedi”, Kaden’Dha figured it was time to go home and help his Mando brothers and sisters.
He reached Mandalore and joined in the fight against the Empire. He led squads on several raids and successfully ran a small “hit and run” operation in the wilds of Mandalore.
During this time, Kaden’Dha Runi learned what it was like to fight for a purpose again, alongside men and women whom he trusted, but most of all, he remembered what it was like to fight for something you believed in. He helped rid his beloved home, Mandalore, of the Empire, and also learned to enjoy ale in the company of good friends.
The Legend Lives On (4 years ABY - ??? )
After the Empire was driven from Mandalore, Kaden'Dha Runi, or Kaden Runi, as his soul is no longer dark, took his rightful place in the Mandalore community. Still not one for big crowds, he lives on a little farm out in the wilds of Mandalore. He could be seen occasionally slipping into town for a few mugs of ale and loudly singing songs of old battles with his arms around friends, old and new alike.
It was last heard that while Kaden never had a blood family, he had started a small adoptive clan if his own. Taking in young Mando youths who had nowhere else to go, and teaching them the skills of farming, fighting, and beskar’gam forging. He also taught them the lessons of being a Mandalorian, as Jango Fett had taught him. Some grew to adults and left in search of their own fortunes, some stayed on Mandalore, content to learn from Kaden’s stories and life lessons.
Clones weren’t bred for long lives, but Kaden seemed to be the exception to all the rules. Maybe it’s his reward for making it through some of the darkest times of the galaxy. No one is really sure if Kaden has left this life, or if he still lives on. His clan doesn’t come into town very often, and Kaden has made so much beskar’gam for his clan that many people around the nearby villages can be seen wearing pieces that Kaden put his hands to. It is still rumored that you might see him if you can ever find his farm or if you walk into a tavern and see an older, wiser, big bellied Mando singing battle songs as loud as he can, that you just witnessed Kaden’Dha Runi, the “Angry, Dark Soul” with a good Mando heart.
Physical Appearance
Kaden'Dha Runi is an older Mando. His many years of rough living before making it to Mandalore has taken their toll on him. He is a bear of a man who has become more "teddy bear" than "grizzly". He still enjoys his ale, but would rather enjoy a mug with family or friends rather than alone. This is the reason for his ample mid section.
Personality
Kaden'Dha Runi is no longer haunted by his demons of vengeance and pain of abandonment. His farm has been a haven for those youth who have nowhere else to go. He teaches all who will listen. He tries to pass on the lessons he learned from Jango Fett, as best as he can.
He still likes his ale, but he would rather toss a few back with family and friends. He is older and wiser, and because of that, some of the younger Mandalorians think he has lost his edge. While he may not be the hunter he was in his past, Kaden is the first to put the beskar'gam on for something he believes in. His council is still sought be some, but because he keeps to himself in the wilds of Mandalore, if you want his council, you have to seek him out.
He has the respect and admiration of all those he has helped, even if those who have never spent time with him think he is just a crazy old Mando.
Equipment and weapons
Armor/clothing
Kaden'Dha made his first set of Mandalorian armor by making modifications to his ARC trooper kit. Until he earned enough credits to purchase better equipment, he used whatever weapons he could scrounge off the battlefield of his final mission with the Grand Army of the Republic, including the 2 DC-15 blasters in this picture, which last records indicate, he still uses.
Weapons
The Blast Tech ST-1200 Devastator is the weapon of choice. Capapble of heavy automatic blaster fire, it can also be used as a long range weapon. Kaden'Dha Runi has made modifications to mount 2 missles, 1 on either side of the barrel.
Vehicles
Kaden'Dha Runi travels in a converted Geldar Bomber called Vengeance.
The right side has been converted to hold several cages to house various species who have been captured, until he can turn them in.
The left side has been converted to a modest living quarters and a small garage/workshop.
The center section houses the galley and the cockpit bubble. She has beefed up sheilding and extra plating in her hull, as well as having several anti-personnel and starfighter class laser cannons mounted in concealed pockets on both the upper and lower hulls. She is a beast that does not show her fangs until it is too late for her prey to escape.
Behind the scenes
Kaden'Dha Runi is the creation of Sal Attinello, a life-long Star Wars fan. I have been in love with Star Wars since I've seen the original in 1977, and have been collecting Star Wars toys and memorabilia ever since.
I was introduced to the Mandalorian Mercs at the San Diego Comic Con in 2008, by members who were trooping the event. In 2009, again at San Diego Comic Con, I had my picture taken with several Mercs and watched as they delighted children and fans of all ages. I vowed then that I would become a Mandalorian Merc and have just as much fun as these guys at bringing a little joy and sunshine into others lives.
So I became an unofficial member with the Manda'galaar clan, and scoured the tutorials and forums until I felt it was time to try my hand at armor building.
In 2010, I began my first build. It took me many months, but I finally finished it and became official just in time for Star Wars Celebration V in Orlando. Heres to many more cons trooping with the Mandalorian Mercs!
