Rancor clan, originally formed out of Columbus, OH now encompasses most of the state of Ohio. They hold armor parties every few months to help with new recruits and current member armor upgrades. They are a fairly active clan with all of the official members attending at least 2-3 events a year.
In 2007, two members in the central Ohio area met up at an event at Starbase Columbus in Westerville. Shortly after that event, armor parties were held at members' houses to help two other members start their armor and join the clan. During this time, only 3 official members were required to start a clan and there were no formal approval processes for the armor...just as long as you had a completed set and could prove so with photos.
The First Four
After a few armor parties, Rancor finally had their required three, but had not picked a name until they got their fourth member. K'raam Xrati, Taglar Dreskk, Gotal'ur Chaab, and Runi Netra all were official by 2008 or prior and began work on deciding a name. Runi later retired his costume and moved on with the 501st Ohio Garrison.
By January 2008 they had formed an Ohio clan and settled on the name Rancor. Unlike many other clans, they chose a creature from the Star Wars universe to represent the clan, similar to how a football team may be named after an animal. This made them slightly unique, as most of the clans during early 2008 were named after the founding members' last name similar to Skirata and Fett.
Rancor Clan originally featured members all from Central Ohio, but as time passed they began to incorporate more members from all around Ohio. So far they now have members in Columbus, Lancaster, Dayton, Cincinnati, and Akron.
The First Events (2008)
Once the warmer weather hit, Rancor clan was out at tons of events. Mostly they tagged along with the 501st Ohio Garrison and Midwest Base Rebel Legion as finding events with the clan on such a small scale was hard to do. The other costuming groups didn't mind the clan tagging along and the clan helped to show they were there to help by volunteering for many of the charity-type events that the 501st had.
The summer of 2008 was one of the biggest sequence of events for Rancor clan, as they had events planned out for 6 straight weekends in a row. It definitely kept the members busy...but as soon as winter and the cold weather hit, the events thankfully dropped to almost nothing. Most of the members used it as "down time" to work on small adjustments on their armor at home.
The 2009 season was in full swing and Rancor clan had attended a few events including ones such as the "Fanboys" movie premiere where we were invited by the writer of the movie to attend along with others from 501st and Rebel Legion. 2009 also found Rancor losing a few members as they either fell inactive or moved out of state, but they did gain a few new members and a handful of new prospective members as well.
2010 was a bit of a slow year for Rancor clan with only a few events attended in Mandalorian gear. Rancor Clan got together in full force bringing together three of the founders, three new members, and four soon-to-be members. Also in attendance were members from Blue Moon Squad in KY, Yustapir Clan in MO, and Suumpir'ade Clan in MI. It was a great turnout and made a small local con feel like one of our large multi-clan gettogethers of years past.
2011 already holds a few events in planning. We're planning a large gathering of mandos at Ohayocon in January, and surely as soon as warmer weather hits in spring we'll be back out at charity events and birthdays.
