Dar'kumn VolFrom MercsWiki
BiographyEarly years (24BBY-11BBY)Originally born Kumn Vol, Dar’kumn found that his name was a joke between his mother Franna and father Jare. They used the “kumn” sound effect anytime something unplanned happened. During an excursion across the Dune Sea, their speeder had malfunctioned which led to a night of repair and the procreation of their first born son. Due to this, Dar’kumn learned to associate his name with mistake. Dar’kumn was a frail child. The training his father gave him helped to strengthen him some, but he never seemed to measure up to his father’s standards. Unlike his brother Kab’el, Dar’kumn could not master a lesson in a few days. Usually one lesson would stretch for months. This severely grated on his father’s nerves. After being passed in a lesson by his sister Wynn, His father told him to find a usefulness in life. Angered by being spurned by his father Dar’kumn dove into the world of building. He dove into learning to build everything ranging from weapons and armor, to vehicles and buildings. His construction skills soared with each new lesson learned. Dar’kumn seemed to memorize everything he read, when applying the lessons to a new construction project on the family homestead. His projects were acknowledged by his father, but always with a bit of sarcasm. On Dar’kumn’s thirteenth birthday, Tusken Raiders attacked the Vol homestead. The raiders blamed the Vol family for a Tusken child that was found dead shot nearby. The Vol family rallied together to protect their home. When Dar’kumn grabbed his blaster rifle, his father said,” What are you going to do with that boy? You can barely hunt.” This enraged Dar’kumn. Without thinking he finished donning his now modified armor and burst out the front door of the complex. Dar’kumn stood his ground without flinching. As he was fired upon, Dar’kumn began to pick off the invaders on by one with his blaster rifle. Dar’kumn was hit in the shoulder, but the damaged was mostly to his armor. After a few seconds all the firing had died down. The entire family was amazed at these seemingly new skills. His father strode forward and asked his son face to face, “Where did you learn to do that?” Dar’kumn stoicly replied, “I read about it.” Sharing with his father the modifications to his weapons and armor which allowed him to augment his skills bringing them on par with his siblings, Jare found that his error was in shunning his training rather than embracing the battle to overcome Dar’kumn’s weaknesses. Later that day Dar’kumn was given his right of passage ceremony. During the ceremony he was renamed. Jare told his son, “From this day forward you will be known as Dar’kumn Vol. You are no one’s mistake, son.” Tatooine and Supercommando Training (24BBY-2ABY)Life on Tatooine was hard for Dar’kumn. The arid conditions of the Jundland Wastes aggravated his respiratory system quite severely. When he was out with his father herding, raising, and training their Dewback stock, Dar’kumn had to wear a protective mask with a rebreather. This mask served as the first influence to his armor modifications. Once Dar’kumn had reached the age of eight, he was already a proficient animal handler and tradesman. His first beskar’gam was built by hand with several integrated tools for building, as well as secondary features to help with maintaining the Dewback herd his family raised. After the Tusken incident at his family’s ranch Jare made arrangements for his son to get special training from an old friend, Baelin Halon. Baelin specialized in training supercommandos. Jare felt that the time he didn’t use in training his son properly could be rectified by the intense regime in which Baelin trained his warriors. He knew his son’s talents would not only emerge, but flourish. After being accepted by Baelin Halon for training at the age of ten, Dar’kumn left to learn the ways of the mandalorian supercommando. Under Baelin’s tutelage he mastered the lessons set before him and began to condition his body. Over time he developed into a warrior and an avid engineer. Dar’kumn was one of many students, but two others stood out as well. They were Spanner Murraan and Ca’tal. Baelin usually paired lesson for Dar’kumn with one of the two students. Spanner was his sparring partner. Though Spanner usually won an engagement in the beginning, Dar’kumn found that it was not combat Baelin was teaching him, it was tactics. Once this lesson was learned the two had epic clashes on the training grid. On a few occasions Dar’kumn would be the victor, but most often it was Spanner. As the two sparred and learned on another’s patterns Spanner knew when he could end a fight and when he could taunt Dar’kumn into going farther than he thought he could. Ca’tal was often Dar’kumn competition for planning and execution exercises. Ca’tal was one to end an excursion as quickly as possible. Often this was with much collateral damage. Dar’kumn saw little honor in some of the actions taken by Ca’tal. The two would often disagree about everything for a mission. Where Ca’tal would concerned with objective, Dar’kumn was concerned with finesse. He wanted to get in, do the job, and get out without it ever being known they were on location. Ca’tal often seemed not to care. Toward the end of their training the two reached an unspoken agreement to work together using both their talents. It was during his training under the formidable Halon that Dar’kumn became aware of the Rebel Alliance. Some of his training missions were in fact for the rebels. The payment to the mandalorian crew was not only in credits for Baelin to continue to train his students, but in combat experience. This gained experience would provide useful later in the lives of each student. During these exercises the youths were deployed as a three man team. Spanner was the brawn, Ca’tal the assassin, and Dar’kumn the strategist. During the excursions the three became more family than friends. Thought they would never admit it, a bond was formed in those years that would prove to last a lifetime. The day finally arrived when Baelin let his students into the universe on their own. Unlike his friends who would strike out on their own, Dar’kumn made it clear he planned not to sell his talents, but use them within the Rebel Alliance to overthrow the Empire. Much to his surprise Baelin tried to talk him out of his decision. Taking Dar’kumn to the side he told the youth, “You are so much like your ancestors it is unreal. Your grandfather was told that the lesser clans had no voice, so he united them. Your father was told that none could make a good life after war, so he began his ranch and prospered in a place only known for hostility. You’re being told that this rebellion doesn’t stand a chance. That they are out manned, out gunned, and out classed. So in the tradition of your clan, you’re going to prove me wrong. That arqet you wear on your armor is quite fitting. Your clan is stubborn, reckless, and committed. That’s why you’re going to be fine. You truly are your father’s son.” Life with the Rebellion (2ABY-4ABY)The Rebel Alliance was glad to receive a new recruit. Dar’kumn has helped in the building many bases and secondary positions for the Rebellion. His team usually set up the bases long before they were needed, making sure that every possible scenario has been taken into account. It is this way of thinking that has insured his position amongst the high ranking officials of the rebel forces. During the long years with the Rebel Alliance it was found that Dar’kumn had a natural secondary talent for harassing supply lines. During the trips to produce a new location to be used by the rebels, Dar’kumn would veer widely from his expected travel corridor to procure equipment. Most time this would be by directly attacking a freighter or two under direct employ of the Empire. The new equipment would be found installed in the locations being constructed. These daring and calculated raids earned a level of respect and admiration from his fellow rebels. They learned to see past the Mandalorian armor and into the sould of the warrior before them. Though technically a Rebel officer, Dar’kumn wore a new set of beskar’gam more in line with his Mandalorian heritage. This suit contained several accommodations and modifications used for engineering, demolitions work, and combat. He repeatedly defended his position of maintaining his heritage and wearing the armor. His opinion was that even though he held the rank of sergeant in the Rebellion, he was still a Mandalorian and if he could not be himself, then the Rebellion was no better than the Empire. Living in the New Republic (4ABY-25ABY)Dar’kumn opened Mandalorian Securities (5ABY) to help fellow Mandalorians earn an honest living without sacrificing their warrior heritage. The security company provided a host of services including personal security, planetary marshalling, and bounty hunting. Permits were aquired for personnel to conduct the jobs taken to avoid having a worker arrested for doing the duty they were hired for. Mandalorian Securites was also the front for a more clandestine operation by Vol. The New Republic did not like the idea of working with smugglers and pirates across the fringes of their territory. Vol was one of few asked to continue privateering operations against the Imperial Remnant. His Letter of Mark allowed him to harass supply lines against the Remnant and only the Remnant. The spoils of such raids were regularly brought to the New Republic for inspection. Anything that was not claimed was given back to Vol for his own uses as well as being compensated for the raid. This allowed Dar’kumn to acquire much for his ventures and expand his growing business empire. The business ventures provided Vol with a healthy income of over 3 billion credits per standard galactic year. Those funds would come in handy for Dar’kumn’s collection of retired and rebuilt Clone War era vehicles and ships. After a vehicle was suitably restored and modified it was taken to an undisclosed location Vol referred to only as Arqet Station. The Yuuzhan Vong War (25ABY-29ABY)During the Yuuzhan Vong War Dar’kumn was commissioned to relay information to the Republic via a network of contacts. He selected a team of fellow mandalorians to help with the mission. Spanner Murraan, leader of Clan Murraan, and former fellow student Ca’tal were among those called. The team visited a host of planets including Tynna, and Coruscant. The details of this mission are hazy by most accounts, but seem to point to the team comprised of both Murraan and Arqet Clan members engaging government troops, “faking” a battle and moving on to the next location to provide intel to the Republic. After such time as Manda’lor Boba Fett broke his ties with the Vong invaders this team and went on to help in the fight to bring down members of the Peace Brigade as well as liberate strategic sites clearing the way for the Republic to gain ground against the Vong. The Call to Mandalore (30ABY)When Fett called for the Mandlorians to return home Vol answered the call in his own fashion. Though he did not return to the planet’s surface, he did settle nearby. Orbiting the planet in a geosynchronous orbit Dar'kumn lived on the his private decommissioned Nebulon B Class Cruiser. This was the only vessel owned by Vol that sported a name not derived from a past love. The Cerar Tay’gan was used by Vol to run Mandalorian Securities as well as privateering. Cerear Tay’gan boasted enough cargo capacity to house twenty four fighters and attach several freighters oalong its central Spine. Four Nu Class Shuttles were among the compliment house aboard the ship. These shuttles were used to transport incoming dignitaries and client as well as working personnel. As the chief offices Mandalorian Securities, communications equipment and internal security were heightened to keep any potential hostiles from taking the facility and allow for daily business to be done with a minimum of complications. Joining the Manda (61ABY)Dar’kumn finally joined the Manda at the ripe age of eighty six standard galactic years. He did not die in battle, but working in the animal training facilities on Arqet Station. While breaking a tauntaun for training he was thrown from the animal. When he hit the ground the taun taun fought back, ultimately breaking Dar’kumn’s neck. This allowed a self accommodating prophecy of Dar’kumn’s to come true. He died cold and alone. It is said that he passed quickly, like a warrior should. Physical Appearance and Personality TraitsDar’kumn was an average sized human with brown hair and eyes. A little on the stocky side, he kidded about it constantly. He was a likable man. Easy to get along with and set in his ways. Not one to back away from a fight he held his opinions quite close to the chest. One of these opinions that led to some discord amongst his peers was that of force users. Whether they were Jedi, Sith, or just some poor guy that was forces sensitive, Dar’kumn blamed them all for the condition of the galaxy. His studies had revealed that many of the that ravaged the galaxy over the years were a direct result of the warring factions of the Jedi and Sith, including the demise of the Jango Fett and the emergence of the clone army. This opinion he spoke freely of until his dying day. One thing that set Dar’kumn apart from others was his penchant for Clone Wars ear vehicles and ships. He sought them out and sent them to Arqet Station to be repaired or rebuilt. Often old systems were upgraded to house new components or armament. Each of these vehicles was named for a lost love of some sort from Dar’kumn’s past. Whether these were lovers, family, or just close friends remains a secret held only by Vol and the gentle waves of time. Most were customised in some fashion to suit his own needs or a mission perameter. One notable quirk of Dar’kumn Vol was to paint the visage of a former girl friend to his vehicles. This girl would almost always be clad in mandalorian armor and would lend to the naming of the vehicle in some fashion. Some notable pieces from his collection were: Grey Wing (Morning Star B Fighter) [1] Shadow Traveller (Theta Class Shuttle) [2] Cat’s Eye (All Terrain Recon Transport) [3] Aqua Militant (Amphibious Interstellar Assault Transport/ Infantry) [4] Ruby Warrior (Nu-class Assault Shuttle) [5] Falling Falleen (Low Altitude Assault Transport/Infantry) [6] Lady Nomad (BARC Speeder) [7] Arqet StationArqet Station is found in the asteroid field of the Hoth System. Dar’kumn went through considerable deliberation and credits with Lando Calrissian to maintain the asteroid base and eight smaller asteroids which provide the entrance to the base. These smaller asteroids have been equipped with repulsor equipment to establish a rotating cylindrical entrance tunnel to Station itself. The larger asteroid housing the base has been hollowed by Calrissian using his Mole Miners. The main hangar bay is along the equatorial axis of the asteroid. The door is emblazoned with the Arqet Clan sigil. The bay is capable of holding twenty four fighters, and four shuttle type craft. Other levels include luxury apartments for those on board, a detention facility, medical facilities, an interrogation room, a mess hall in the form of a cantina, an operations room, conference room, parts shop, repair bay, power station, and warehouse. Much like the “Cerar Tay’gan”, Arqet Station houses much in the way of security armament including passcode protected motion sensing automatic defense systems. The asteroid is in itself a fortress for Dar’kumn and his companions. It serves as a home away form home during recruiting, privateering efforts, or missions of other sorts. The station is open to only a hand picked few whom Dar’kumn have given the passcode to open the asteroid entry tunnel. Behind the ScenesDar’kumn Vol was originally created as a character for the Mandalorian Mercs Costuming Club. The character is used during troops at conventions and charity events. The character Darkumn Avril from 2nd Life is detailed to resemble Dar'kumn Vol as closely as possible. Both are portrayed by the same person. The modified Mythosuar Skull sigil on Dar’kumn's armor reflects his previous membership in the Application Approval Team for the Mandalorian Mercs. The sigil was written into his backstory for those who are not familiar with the Mercs to still be able to identify the symbol as meaning he is mandalorian in heritage. This character has also appeared in the RPG’s By the Horns and Call to War on the Mandalorian Mercs forums. Dar'kumn is the current Alor'ad for the Arqet Clan of the Mandalorian Mercs Costuming Club and a member of the Oriramikad. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
