You can find piano hinges at a music or hardware store, make sure to cut them with a good saw blade (diamond, carbon-fiber, etc). Rare earth magnets (R.E.M.) can be found online fire a better price than a hardware/hobby store. I used appliedmagnetics.com, great prices!

You can buy both at Lowe's or Home Depot, might be cheaper online, but more convenient. The magnets work pretty good, depending on the size (hardware store selections are pretty limited, but it should get you started). I use them to hold the top of my gauntlet 'datapad' shut so the phone doesn't fly out during use.

Chro: you mounted our phone to your gaunts? I had that same idea. Haven't done it yet. I'd love to see pictures!

He did, nice work too. I didn't know that you mounted your phone with magnets though. I'd be a bit paranoid about putting magnets near my phone.

The thing with most magnets is that their magnetic fields only extend a few millimeters from their surfaces, so once you glob on the expoxy, stick a case and some greebs in the way, the phone's pretty safe. Also, most modern phones have some decent shielding to protect themselves crammed in there.

Here's the latest set of pictures from my build thread

Just a note though, if you want to put a phone in a gauntlet, you have to greeb it as much as possible, an earlier build of mine is sort of the barest looking you can get away with.

I'm a big fan of http://www.kjmagnetics.com/, they have a huge selection of sizes and strengths at great prices. I bought a bunch of N52 1/8" x 1/16" for making the parts on some Warmachine miniatures swappable, and they work great. I also use some rare earth magnets on my Tron disc to attach it to a hub on my back, and if I bump it too hard the disc falls off. I'm only using 5 pairs of magnets though, they are the ones from Michaels. Stronger magnets would probably work better.

You guys don't need to use super strong magnets.  I bought some at Joann Fabrics and they worked fine.  I went to their magnet section and picked up some of the SILVER magnets, not the black ones.  I think for each connection point, I ended up with two on one half and one on the other half.  So for each gaunt with two connection points I used 6 magnets per gaunt.  It is a strong enough hold if you place it in just the right spot where it's slightly loose and not tight enough that if you push against it that it will pop open.
