Z's bucket
« on: Jun 05, 2012, 10:48 PM »
I have been wanting to start on my costume for a while now, but just havent had the drive to do so. That was until my buddy said he had a Fett helmet in his storage he didnt want.

This is what he brought me.

He had this Don Post helmet for a while and didnt know how he got it.  So I got it for free

First thing I did was cut out the visor and filled in the dent.

I then started to add my wearthing, or atleast what would become my weathering. The helmet had a small crack in it, and after fixing it, I decided to make it part of the look.

And now...we paint!

And now to damage it some

I just need to order the visor to finish her up.

Actually, that helmet is going to need some body reworking. Not sure if that means youll lose your paint apps or not but, to get that helmet up to club standards, it needs alot of TLC.

You need to bring a large pot of water to a boil and dunk the helmet in it for a couple of minutes until it gets malable. Then all the flat, sunken and mishapen area's need to be reshaped and the helmet dunked into cold water to cool it, and hopefully retain the proper shape. Installing a craft ring at the base and around the inside of the dome may be in order as well. While I don't typically recommend them, I would definately say get a T-visors.com visor as the firmer material will also help hold the shape.

From what I can see, the left cheek area and the front "rim" to be reshaped. It shouldn't be too hard.  As for the visor, I was gonna order mine from t-visor.

Any other thoughts?

The dome needs a complete reshape. It's squished and flat.

That is the one that I see giving me the most trouble.   I just found out he had it sitting on the top of the helmet for years in storage

I can still see the copyright info printed on the back, you may want to use some spot putty to fill it in and sand it down.  Also you may want another coat of bondo or filler putty in the dent, the edges of the dent are still quite apparent.  ...do this stuff AFTER you've determined if you can reshape the beast.

You're in my area. Drop me a PM and you can bring it by the house sometime and we'll see if there's something I can't help you do to fix it.
