Haran Tracyn's kit
« on: May 07, 2012, 08:30 PM »
Figured it was about time to make this since I actually have something to show now. My character is a close-range fighter and will use a Stouker concussion rifle for range, then use gaunt-mounted tekkokagi (wrist claws) for finishing the job. The idea for my kit is a bit of a "wild" feel, right now I'm debating on if I want to keep it human species or go with a nonhuman like a Shistavanen to tie in with that (starting to lean more in the nonhuman direction).
Since I'm full-time in college this probably won't see much progress until I'm home in June. I don't have much space here to work anyway, aside from the theater shop, but even when I'm in there it's 90% set building  but I do have permission to use the stuff there when/if there's downtime.
Here's the current concept - kind of roughly done, but it gets the point across, the symbol on the side I hope to put in place of the chest diamond.

Gear I have so far:

Plus boots, which I don't have pictures of.

Progress as of last night:

Some things are off, but by the time these were taken it was around 1am and my mom and I were both exhausted.
And a few months ago I started working on my conc rifle, started with a Nerf Praxis.

Since the default position of the front pump is forward and can't be pushed back unless the ammo is present, I opened it up and took all of this out...

Going along with the close-combat idea, I decided to add a bayonet. Cut it out of a piece of scrap wood and sanded it to give it shape and dulled it, then test taped it to the front pump, which I had unscrewed and flipped around for a base.

It stays in a locked position in the back, but it can be extended too.

For the claws, I know that they'll be detachable and will be stored in the pockets on the pants of my flightsuit. Chances are I'll be using rare earth magnets to keep them on the gaunts.

I'm hoping to get this done and official by CVI, but again, I probably won't be making much progress until I'm done with the year.

Went to the Army and Navy surplus store with my friend the other day and man, it was like going into a candy store. Picked up a few things I think I can use in my kit.

Best part of the trip was getting gloves that were the same color as my flightsuit and actually fit me, and I'm thinking of making the twin pouches into stun/EMP/flash-bang grenade holders. The larger pouch is thinner so I'm thinking of leaving it as is or cutting off the flap (or at least part of it) and making it a knife sheath.
I'm also going to add this to my armor somewhere, currently thinking of taking out the center stripe on the helmet and having it go there instead. Thoughts?

Trying some templates tonight...I tried to line them up as best as possible, but that was a little hard with using only a webcam. I also don't really have anything here to flatten my chest so that also may be a factor of it looking a little awkward, but aside from that do they look about the right size?

Right now that only thing I can tell by myself is that I might need to trim the sides of the chestplates because I noticed my arms brush against them when I move.

Height wise they seem to be right, but the width looks a little off. I can't really see the neck plates scale properly but I think that counts too. Shoulders seem good to me though. It'd be better to get an experienced eye to tell.

A slight trim to narrow the plates to your frame & you should be in business.  Looks good thus far!

But I will say Just keep the Same lines ..... They are perfect .....  ;)

This will be best realized after shaping ..... Keep up the Great Work ....  8)

Thanks all, and I don't mind the same point being said again - just means it really needs to be done, lol.
Anyway, I printed out a new set of templates and cut them into cardboard to give me a better idea how the eventual plastic I use will probably sit.
With the helmet:

The collar I had some issues with, and the chests might need a little more...I took about half an inch off, and they definitely fit better but I'm not sure.

Without:

You have the spacing on the everything pretty well done. I might try and make the spacing between the stomach and the chest about a quarter of an inch wider though, just bring the stomach plate down a bit

I won't kill you, but you'll wish you were dead

You and I are gonna look a lot alike if you do that. LOL My helmet has my wolf symbol right on the dome.

I can live with that if you can.   ;)

I guess great minds think alike. ;D

Next time I decide to mess with the armor I'll keep that in mind, thanks.

Huh, didn't know someone had already beat me to the idea lol. I've actually been thinking of either putting it on a shoulder bell or the front loincloth now, leaning more towards loincloth as is. Your bucket looks great though!

Thanks, I'm hoping to get over to the OM in my home area this weekend and actually get something not cardboard done. Given my limited supplies and time at college I think I'm doing okay.

Anyway, decided to mess around with my helmet today and do a mockup of the "ears" that I'd like to have on it eventually. Very much inspired from the Koing Wolf, if anyone remembers Zoids.

Going for a raised edge on the outside of the ears.

Trying out for a 3D look - Front

Hmm... I don't think I've ever seen an eared helmet before! But it feels kind of like Shae Vizla's large appendage on the side of her helmet, so I'm sure it will fly! I love your plans so far. Keep the updates coming; I'll be watching.
