And I appreciate the opinions very much!

I went to an estate sale today and stumbled across some actual old, rusty traps.  They were smaller and didn't have teeth and use what looks like spring steel instead of actual springs.  They weren't circular like mine and were shaped kind of like slices of bread.
They were a little pricey and I wouldn't be able to use them on my kit, so I didn't get any.  It was still cool to see some real ones, though.

I'm not going to make it more angular because that means I'd have to completely ditch this one and build out of different materials, which I'm not willing to do right now.  I wanted this to be a test to see if I could build something out of found items that looks good, is sturdy and most of all incredibly cheap.

I think I'm going to add some kind of boxy greeblies around the hinges and add an antenna and a light to one of them.  I have some spare led's and stuff to wire up a 9 volt.  I have a leftover latching switch from an abandoned lightsaber project.
I also think I'm going to find some more misc. greeblies to add to the body here and there to make it a shade less plain and imply there's a little bit of tech involved.
Also after looking at some real traps that looked really, really old, I gotta say my paint looks reasonably realistic.

I've been looking for a SW equivalent but there aren't that many out there.  Most of what I've seen are ray shield traps or something electricity based.  I'm going to have to keep looking.

You should be able to change the shape of the trap you already made if it is made from a bucket.  Just apply heat and you can make it look similar to the real traps you saw rather than scrapping the whole thing.

I actually think this is a pretty awesome idea.  Your builds are always awesome, Blackbird.  I'm looking forward to this one coming to fruition.

Thanks a lot, Novoc.
I haven't made any progress in the past few days but I hope to work on it today or tomorrow.
Bazii, I had thought about using heat but a lot of this thing is made of hot glue.  And the heat would likely ruin the paint.  It's a good idea and I'll probably do that if I do a future build.

Add some mud/ debris, I don't know if you have ever trapped before, but you do want to make sure your prey doesn't see it; loose the shiny parts, and get them real dirty. Might add a stake, or some sort of anchoring device, depending on what you are trapping, and where you are trapping.

Pretty much look into real trapping, the principals would be the same, the trap would just need a "Warsy" feel. Is your character Wookiee Trapping, Ewok Trapping, might add an electrical shocking system to disable your prey if you are wookiee trapping.

Just a few thoughts.

My kit has some Wampa, Wookiee, Ewok, Trandoshan and Rancor on it.  It's not really supposed to be for any specific creature.
The electric shock thing is a good idea.  I just need to think of a way to visualize it.

Part of the anchor, a small insulated wire that runs to the trigger (center circle) where there is a small peice of exposed copper, (or whatever metal you are using) so when the animal walks into the trap, and sets it off, it shocks the like a taser.

Here are some pics of what I think will be the final design.  I'm going to touch up the paint and add a rust effect to the final prop.  The hot glue on the center trigger is very visible here, but it was intentional.  When the paint is final, I hope to make it look like flaking, textured rust.
I added an antenna, a little techy-mechanical greeblie thingy to the center and some old computer parts around the outside.
There's also a rod that runs from the trap up the chain to my belt that I hope will keep everything from twisting.

Instead of it being something that clamps on to a limb. I would remove the teeth or cut them to be shorter and squared off,  and add more coils in it and use it as a ray sheild trap  like you mentioned earlier.  Step in it and get caught in a small sheild dome, not something clamped to a leg.  Kind of like what happened in episode 3 with obi and anikin on the droid comad ship but portable.  Would be a lot more swarzy to me.
There is no problem in life that can not be solved through the proper aplication of high explosives.

Yeah but then I'd probably have to explain what it is to everyone.
The only canon trap I could find was a stasis trap, which would work like a ray shield, but it doesn't look like a trap at all.  It just kind of looks like a... thingy.
I took this to work the other day and a coworker, who is also into props and costuming, was like, "good god why do you have a bear trap?!"  Everyone is afraid to touch it because it looks like it'll snap on them.  I kind of like that reaction and want to maintain it while adding some Star Wars to it.
I may superglue in some wampa hair or something.
