Corellian Sniper Tycho Drayson-WIP
« on: Jan 23, 2012, 03:27 AM »
It is time for me to begin my very own journey into Mando-dom. I am be beginning my first kit...EVER.

For the "fluff" he is Tycho Drayson a Corellian country boy who grew up hunting, joined the Corelian Special Forces as a sniper where he earned his blood stripes and was eventually adopted into the Mandalorian culture.

This is the first and only concept art I have for this build. I took a couple MiniMandos and edited them to create my own. I have a pretty solid idea in my head so this won't be changing much if at all.

With that said, I will be using a Kama, or half Kama, on the final build instead of the duster. I got a back plate I wasn't planning on, so I figured why hide it?

I purchased the plates from TK2280, and they are great. The picture included is for a size reference. With my limited college resources the plates were hastily double-sided taped on my under shirt, and if I moved they fell off. We were lucky to even get this picture with all of the pieces on at once. Because of the method used, the chest, ab, and collar plates are sagging severely, but just about everything else is in place. (Except the cod piece and the back plate, there was no way I could get either one to stay)

I would greatly appreciate any and all feed back, both positive and negative, to help me view this build from another's perspective. I have, after all, been looking at this from only my own perspective.

Coming Soon.....

B Pull CW Death Watch Gaunts from TK3181
A Flight suit (SWAT BDUs) from Zohar Nef
And many more exciting adventures!

Nice start bud. I would advise pulling the whole lot up, as you mention, so that the collar armour actually sits up by your collar. And trim the chest pieces a bit, they look like your arms will be rubbing against them and this will make it more comfortable to move  ;)

Yup what Nate said. The U on the inside of the gorget (collar) plate should be almost all the way up to your neck, then use the spacing you are currently using and reset the torso plates.

Thanks for all of the words ner vode!

thanks for the idea, it was rather close to allow for arm movement. Hopefully I'll be able to do some work by the weekend, and I'll make sure that trimming those plates happens.  :)

Here is a picture of the first day i got the armour, and somehow got it all to stay in place without much tape. This is closer to the planned placement.

As you can see I'm having to hold the ab plate in place.

Things have been quiet here, way too quiet. Between touring with a band, producing an album for a senior project, and just Darth RealLife being a pain, I haven't had much time (or cash) to put into this project.

But with that being said progress has been made since the last post! I picked up the gaunts from TK3181 and they are awesome. I can't imagine what would be different if they were A-pulls, maybe they would already be painted. who knows. The flight suit on the other hand is a different story, I got the suit and it is exactly as described with no problems except that it is 2-3x's wider than I need it to be for my frame.

For now I will be doing what I can with my limited resources in acquiring the needed paints, and (the hard part) having a space to paint the hard parts in. they frown upon rattle can painting in the dorms.

Progress has been made!  ;D

I damaged the plates before painting with a knife to create gashes.

I then applied two coats of primer armour, sanding with 400 grit sandpaper between coats.

I then applied two coats of silver, sanding with 600 grit sandpaper between coats.

Then I applied just a $.99 tube of walgreens hand lotion to the gashes with a q-tip, followed by three coats of black sanded by 1000 grit between coats.

I removed the lotion after applying the black, then added more to the same areas to allow some black to show on the big dent areas, and applied four coats of red and sanded with 2000 grit between coats. After everything was removed i sanded the whole set with 2000 grit gently for a final touch.

The stomach plate was damaged, by me and my knife, so wasn't painted in this round. The knees and cod were also damaged when I moved from Missouri to Texas. The armour, I have decided, will be a light set to better reflect my hopeful role in the SpecOps brigade as a sniper.

Yet again all feedback is welcomed, and appreciated.

Very creative with the masking fluid, lol! I appreciate someone who can do things just as well for considerably less money. Any staining from the hand lotion not visible in the pictures?

The weathering and the black showing through is very nice. I especially like the diagonal slash from collarplate to chestplate to tie everything together. I know you said you sanded everything after the final coat, but it's hard to see any small scuffs and scratches in the pictures. From the pics the weathering is a bit spotty on its own but some smaller scratches (even laying the knife on again - but gently!- into the paint) would help to make it look lived-in.

Nicely done, vod! Keep it up.

First off, thanks!
No there is no staining from the lotion...... Luckily. As for the "lived in" part I haven't even begun the weathering process. I'll weather everything all at once after I finish the painting phase of this build. Adding dirt, grime, scratches, and the like in one massive armour beat-up session. You know, I really look forward to that.  :)

Me too! ;D The world better look out when I start weathering, because aluminum objects with sharp edges and corners WILL be flying across every surface I can find.
