My OSDW Helmet WIP. Pic HEAVY
« on: Apr 18, 2013, 04:48 PM »
Well I finally jumped in and got myself a bucket. I was eyeing the OSDW helmet for about 2 months and just when I was about to pull the trigger, Hondo pulled the mold  :o . But the stars aligned and Teilyr Farsel was selling one, so I jumped on it.

Got it in the mail and instantly got to work.

Thats right out of the box. Looked amazing but some love was needed. So I got out the bondo.

Thats the second coat of Bondo to even out the seam on top, along with a few other little areas the first coat and sanding missed.

All sanded down and even. No more dip in the top of the helmet and pretty even.

3 Coats of primer on there. First coat showed some areas I needed to sand a bit more, and the other 2 were to give the paint a nice layer to adhere to.

I was going to work on it a bit more, but it started to rain and the humidity would have made the paint take forever to dry since I am working in my garage and the propane heater decided it wants to be cranky and not work today. If the weather holds up tomorrow, I am going to get the coats of chrome on there, then go for the black. After that I get crazy with painters tape, and then I need to find a green that is between Neon, and Hunter.

Never again will I use chrome paint. OMG it runs like no ones business and takes forever to dry! I sanded down the areas that looked like hell and applied a second coat. I'm ok with a couple areas since its the back of the helmet, but sheesh that is aggrivating. The top coats will cover a bit though as I am going semi gloss black with Gloss Meadow Green accents. Prolly will toss a few kill stripes on the back over the areas anyway.

How did you apply the paint? Light mistings that don't completely cover the primer, or one giant layer that covers everything at once?
I want my moving sig back.

Light coats. The second one was the one that decided to run. It wasn't a HUGE run, but it was enough. Prolly didn't leave enough time between them sadly. Thing that kills me is I do a lot of painting on the side to make extra cash. Total rookie mistake as I never used this chrome before.

what kind of paint did you use? I use Krylon metallic for any metal finish I paint on costumes. I haven't tried the Chrome, but I have used, Gold, Silver and Copper metallic from Krylon and they work great. Only problem I encounter in when the spray head gets clogged and the paint splatters.

I used Rustoleum Chrome. Its a bit heavy compared to the aluminum I have used in the past.

Behold! My amazing mspaint skills

The green is a gloss, and the rest of the helmet will be a semi gloss black. Personally I hate gloss and always have, but the green I like only comes in gloss, so I will deal.

The way I see it, I wll give the whole thing 2 coats of the green, then mask it off and do the black. Just seems easier in my mind.

After a few weeks of sanding off that horrid chrome paint I used, spraying primer only to find more areas that needed to be sanded down because of that chrome, and doing it all again many times, I have finally painted my helmet.  I am going for a clean look since this is my first kit and I cant bring myself to take sandpaper to it after all this work. Base coat is Rustoleum Satin Black, and the trim is Satin red. I will probably add a stencil on the forehead at some time as soon as I can decide on one. And when NJ gets clan status I will add the clan name to the back.

Now to get to work on the plates.

The red is a little more RED in person, but not crazy bright red.

not usually a fan of black and red, but it looks sweet on this helmet. Well done!
I would just like everyone to know that I suck... And that I'm a girl... And I like ribbons in my hair... And I want to kiss all the boys.

Thank you very much. :D

To be completely honest I also am not the biggest fan of black and red. But after failing to find a green I liked in Satin, I said heck with it. Very thankful that it came out as well as it did because I really did not want to have to repaint and retape everything again!

Now to get my vest done and hit get the plates attached so I can get a fit test.

Giving the whole thing a coat of Testor's Dullcote  will kill any sheen and make you look less like a power ranger, especially if you aren't going to age or weather it.

Thanks!

2 hours of cutting painters tape to fit around the horns and such paid off. I'm thinking of doing some stenciling on the top, just need to figure what design to go for.
