Question: Stanky Paint!
« on: May 14, 2012, 01:26 PM »
Now that my first bucket newly painted, the sickly-sweet smell of Krylon spray paint still lingers! Not too bad in general, but more noticeable when I am wearing the thing.  Don't get me wrong... I don't feel ill from it or anything, but it's sort of obnoxious after a while.  Will the smell just fade over time or is there something I can do?  Should I hang it outside in front of a fan, maybe shove an odor-eater shoe insert in there or something for a few days?  Open to any and all ideas, including just waiting it out if that's the case.  Just wondering if any of you veteran Mercs had any insight...

Typically the paint smell is gone within 24-72 hours once the paint is fully cured.

What material is your helmet made from? Is it fiberglass(ed) by chance? If that's the case, it's probably the fiberglass youre smelling not the paint. I have a fiberglass helmet that Ive had for nearly 5 years and it still has a mild fiberglass smell to it. The only way Ive come across to be rid that smell is to coat the interior with a few layers of Plasti-Dip rubber spray.

Ah ha, I see.  The helmet is a Rubies 2-piece.  The interior was glazed with some fiberglass resin to strengthen the joint where the two halves were put together... that could be the culprit.  Paint has been on and dry for almost two weeks, so perhaps you are on to something.
