Visor Shade Comparison
« on: Feb 22, 2012, 03:37 PM »
If you have different visor shades, post them here for others to see.  I just ordered the classic Fibremetal "Dark Green" visor that TK409 used (around $5) AND a Fibremetal "Shade 5.0" visor (around $18) from RJSafety.com.  The "Dark Green" is a LOT greener and more transparent than the Shade 5.0.  I was not sure whether the "Dark Green" was closer to Shade 5 or Shade 3, so I bought it to find out.  I took photos of each with the flash on.

Less direct flash, capturing both visors (Shade 5.0 on right)

The "Dark Green" is obviously green, even with a dark surface behind it.  There has to be nearly zero light transmission behind it for it to appear black.  Even then, when hit with a direct flash, it's transparent and appears green.  When pressed against your face, the transparency of that is better than the Shade 5.0 - acting more like a tinted toy lens and less like sunglasses.  This appears to be more like a "Shade 3.0".

The Shade 5.0 appears black unless there is light on the other side of it, in which case it appears a dark green.  It has a darker tint, kind of like some dark sunglasses, when pressed against your face.

My recommendation:  splurge on the extra $$ if you have to and get the Shade 5.0.
