That's what paint and weathering is for  8).

Serriously, Ive seen and made cardboard boxes look more like metal than some actual metal plates all due to how the paint apps are done.

Just personal opinion, but the canon references to crushgaunts are, to me, just gloves with spikes in. In my mind, I see crushgaunts as a more mechanical contraption that fits over your normal hand, like with pistons, metal support rods and the like. It's kinda taking that analogy of "Well it's a mesh weave that does it" as being not enough, and turning it into the extreme. Spikes are not enough; the idea of the gaunts is that they assist in crushing things so they should have some kind of indication of that.

But the insidious aspect of crush gaunts is that they don't advertise their ability. "internal pressure causes micronized iron particles to re-align, maximising crushing force"

Exactly! But I think that it will all come down to personal preference and how much work they want to put into their costume (or at least their gloves anyways) that will decide what the main version of crushgaunts will look like.
