DE-10 WIP updated 2/8/12
« on: Jan 05, 2012, 11:40 PM »
back in the day i used to play SWG and always liked the look of the DE-10, so i plan on taking it on as my weapon project. I have no previous prop building experience, but i've got some idea's to make it doable.

This thread should help you out. It's got a nice discussion of the pistol's base, as well as some invaluable pictures from Ick'tan's build in the twelfth post.

That's what I'm talking about. It's a power generator, in the middle of a tree. Strange

I picked up my Mal pistol (assuming youu are talking about Mal from Firefly/Serenity) for something like $50 painted a while back. I can check to see if the guy is still selling them if you want. Always loved the look (but it really doesn't look like the DE-10 much at all), but be ready for the same criticism I get for using my modded Ronon Dex pistol as my sidearm.

As far as the DE-10 build goes, I have seen a few floating around the costuming circuit. It actually would be pretty easy to build if you used an old Denix replica or something for a base. My Ronon pistol uses a Colt 1860 as the base and is nice and heavy. Have fun with the build. You will always dig a prop more if you make it yourself.

If I may chime in here, the DE-10 looks to be a modified Dance cap and ball revolver.  It seems too light to be a Colt Dragoon and is obviously not a navy because it has the round barrel versus the octogon and not the army because of the modified loading lever at the bottom. ;)
Dance:

vs
Dragoon:

vs
Colt Navy:

vs
Colt Army:

the only thing that leads me to believe more in the dragoon is the blast shield behind the cylinder and cap nipples being present on the DE-10

Outside of getting my cowboy geekness out, I believe there are some kids toys that mimick the Colt Navy.  Cap guns, squirt guns, that sort of thing.  I wouldn't recommend using an actual replica of any of these guns because of their price.  :D Dragoons are very expensive in the $400 range at the top with the brass-framed navy and army at the bottom for $150.

Now saying that, I'm actually building DE-10s as well, and using brass-framed navy's to do it.  I like the navy more than the army, I'm just a fan of the octogon barrel, so it's just going to look more flashy than the original DE-10.  I'm using the basics of the navy but then taking out the cylinder and replacing it with a completely fake wood one and covering up the channel for the hammer, making the gun completely un-fireable.

The DE-10 is also my favorite SW gun because it is so Steampunk Wild West and just would look amazing with beskar'gam.  Hence why I actually enjoy the brass frame for this option for my kit, that and these obviously won't be fired nearly as often as my prized Colt Armies I use every month in CAS, so the brass for a prop isn't an issue and I still like that when I carry these, like good airsoft, they feel real.

Let me know how it turns out :)  I'll be posting up my prop pistols soon, hopefully by the end of February.

Let me know if there's anything you need, and we can collaborate on this awesome pistol :)

Not sure if he is still making and selling them but Ca-Loar from Arizona was resin casting these. I have one. Might want to hit him up.

Ive seen a few out there in person, the resin is a bit susceptible to heat. When I got mine, the barrell had "drooped" a bit. I can/should have fixed it by now by simply heating and rasiing it but never did. It was quickly retired for other weapons and into the junk box. I'd be happy to part with it if you're interested.

I used to have one, But i found it was too small for my hand. Granyn is right about being based from the Dance brothers pistol. I actually have a replica of one, So i knew what it was straight away.

I was considering buying a resin cast one, but then I realized that my dad has a metal workshop with a lather, mill, and a MIG welder. And the all-powerful dremel tool. So I will be making it mostly of scrap metal.

I would be interested in one or two, depending on the price point of them.
