The two collar plate idea was pretty much my solution to the issue of spacing between the collar and chest plates. Personally I think it looks rather nice and flows better than just making a longer collar plate. (The problem, I think, is that sometimes just making a larger collar plate can look clunky, if that makes any sense. Just my opinion.)
