Jaro Ge'tal (Upgrade time!)
« on: Oct 17, 2011, 10:10 PM »
Okie dokie folks, time for kit #2! This kit will be for the same character, but under a slightly different name (though for application reasons I will keep Jaro At Jurkadir as my SN and such.) As far as my charactor's backstory goes, this kit will be named Jaro Par Skira.
     So here goes. I have started work on the armor, again crafted from Sintra. I've decided to add a lot of very intricate designs to the armor, and from another fellow Oklahoma OM (thanks Destroyer) learned a technique using a leather tool to add a texture pattern on the Sintra. Here are a few pics;

Here I've traced out the pattern on the collar and begun the tedious process of adding the texture

Here is the finished Collar:

And here are the two breast-plates:

I am still working on the rest of the armor, and will post updates as much as I can. I haven't decided whether I am going to paint the textured areas or just leave all the armor black. Though I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

Yep definitely an awesome kit in the making! I wouldn't go with the gold... Or if so, very slightly. But this is just my opinion. Again, great work!

You can see here in this pic what it would look like in gold. My shoulder bells are textured with this same technique.

I would go with red for the texture but that's just me feeling some school spirit oh yeah and how did u texture it
The reason for armor is for you can get close enough to a person with a blaster to attack him with your sword

I would say personally, that you should limit the amount of gold to the outer edges of the plates, I think the texture already adds depth to the plates, so you won't need that much.

I would also spray the plates silver, then black again with a bit od toothpaste/mustard/latex for that weathered look.

Helmet builder and custom designer, PM me for details or click here.

You know, I've heard of people using toothpast, but haven't seen how it's used exactly. Know where I can find a tutorial?

This is a tutorial by Xorim Kor using masking fluid. It's basically the same method using different materials...! Hope this helps!

I'm using just plain ol' Sintra. I'll post a pic when I can of what the tool is. But basically you just press into the sintra with a lot of pressure and it holds, but you have to do things in a certain order.
1. Cut out your shape.
2. Using the template, trace it onto a sheet of paper, then draw out your design.
3. Cut out the traced shape and place it on the cut of Sintra, and tape it on so it doesn't move.
4. Trace over the lines you drew. (with a pen) This will create an impression onto the Sintra.
5. Remove the paper, then draw (again with a pen, very important) the lines in the impressions you just made. This is very important, because when you heat up to shape the piece, the impressions made with the pen will smooth out and no longer be there, leaving only the pen markings.
6. Heat up and shape your piece.
7. Then you can use the tool (I used a leather working tool) to press into it. It is very tedious work. This probable took me around 7 hours or so for the collar and two breast-plates.
This is actually a technique I 'borrowed' from Destroyer, who used it on his kit.

Thanks for the info, vod...I'm gonna try it on my new Legact kit!  ;)

by "leather working tool" do you mean a leather stamp? ( the kind you hit with a hammer to impress the design). and did you hammer it or just press it down forcfully? did you heat it to do so?

Yes it was a leather stamp. All I did was press it down forcefully. No heat required. Though if you mess up somehow, you should be able to use a heat gun to take the impressions out.
