Morut's FIrst Blaster (Advice Welcome)
« on: Oct 02, 2011, 05:20 PM »
Here's a pic of the first  blaster I have put togeather (I have two/ three others I am working on too).
It's just primed (I still need to sand, fill some gaps/ low spots, and paint), but was wanted to see what you guys think.
So.... Will it pass muster?

That looks great. What did you use as the base?

Thanks Vod!
The lower is from an cheaper spring airsoft pistol, it came with that under barrel laser. The upper is from these new lightstrike laser tag toys, it's meant to be an under barrel grenade/ shotgun attachment. I used some scrap sintra, lamenated some peices and shaped them to fill the gaps. Then epoxyed them all togeather.

Yay! Thanks Jerek.

I just sanded and applied the first layer of spot putty. Waiting for it to cure now. Will sand again and see if it needs more filling, if not then a second coat of primer tonight.

I think all you need is the final paint. That looks really slick.

Thanks Vods!
The filling is done. Waiting for it to dry from the washing then gonna hit it with another coat of primer tonight. Tomorrow comes the final painting.
I'm actually using the lightstrikes for the base for a lot of the weapons I'm doing. They have the perfect shapes for what I want, and being flat (ish), can build up any way I want.

Have you messed around with removing the decals on any of the larger Lightstrikes?  I am interested to know if the electronics is integrated into the decals, or if they can be removed and still leave the electronics intact.

Yeah, I have. It can be removed without messing up the electronics, but the button is a thin metal strip under the decal, so if your not careful you could rip it off when removing the decals. It looks like this:

The middle set of wires is the button

My solution is to trim around the buttons, leaving the decals intact over the buttons and to cover the decal with adhisive vinyl.

Thanks for all the nice words! Life got busy yesterday and wasn't able to do anything, and today is rainy... :(
But we will see what its like when I get off work, if its nice, base coats going on tonight. Let's hope I can weather it so it actually looks good! Lol

Well, I have it all weathered, and masked for the grip to get a coat of rubberizer, then onto a flat clear coat, but.... I had a misshap last night... the work bench got knocked and the blaster fell onto the concrete, it hit at just the right angle and shattered the grip into 4 pieces. They have been epoxyed back togeather. Next I am going to grip with epoxy and make a wrap that strengthens the grip... hope I can salvage the blaster... :(
