Vest idea; will this work?
« on: Sep 26, 2011, 01:01 AM »
Hey Mandos,

Brand new to this and have been really excited going through the planning stages of my Mando armor. It's been a lot of info to take in but for the moment I'm trying to sort out the "soft" parts of the outfit.

http://www.zephyrpaintball.com/product/PB-PROT-08TOPBLK/Proto-Paintball-Performance-Top.html

Would this work for a vest? The armor plates would cover most of the ridges and things, and even if a little shows through red/black is my desired color scheme.

Anyone have any success utilizing paintball armor for a vest or care to offer a more practical suggestion for a "Jango style" vest?

Thanks

From my understanding that will not work. There are a few makers of vests in the Trading station, or if you want or can, you could make your own vest. There is a great tutorial here...

Simple answer: No, that will not work as a flak vest.

Almost every single paintball vest out there will not pass muster unless you're doing legacy style plates that cover the whole thing.

A more practical solution would be to make one yourself from a thick fabric like pleather, leather, or duck cloth. You can usually find a good, thick fabric for under $15 a yard. I'd recommend going to smaller, non-chain fabric stores to find those really good deals.

Or you can buy one from someone. A Jango style vest is going to cost you at least $50 from pretty much any vendor.

If you want to save money, make your own vest. If you don't know how to sew, there was never a better time to learn!

The biggest issue I can see with that is that it's meant to be worn as a base layer and it's made of lycra, so you wouldn't really be able to fasten your plates too well.

Ok, thanks for all the replies. In retrospect I can see the obvious issues with using this as a vest. I suppose I'll have my GF whip me up a flak vest from the template.

Thanks all :)

Like I said, most paintball vests, not all. There's a big difference (from what I can see) between your vest and the one he was asking about.

Your vest is how you correctly use a paintball vest as a flak vest.

My Plates Are Aluminum and they are fastened with Pop Rivets.

My next Set of Armor (C.Ward 3.0) will use the Same vest underneath
a fabric "Flack vest" Shell with Velcro side closures . Cannon look With " 0 " plate movement .
Not to mention I can be " IN " or " OUT " of my Armor in 30 secs not Min's .

I hope this helps .

Good luck with your Build .
