Sagging chest plate
« on: Oct 27, 2011, 04:36 PM »
I finished a new chest plate recently and made it all one piece (Thanks Mereel!) But it sags down about 2 inches. Now people are going to say that my vest is too big but it's not, trust me. I'm pretty sure it's because it's to heavy. It's attached with velco. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

It may be that the material is not sturdy enough As Ohl'd said, pics will help.

Not entirely sure but it is elasticy so that could be a contribution factor. It's and old nike vest that we had laying around and made a great vest.

If that's the case, then that vest will NOT support the plates. Your vest needs to be made of a durable fabric that does NOT stretch. Most members use canvas, duck cloth, leather, or backed pleather for their vests, as these materials do not succumb to the weight of the plates.

You might be able to keep the vest if you sew some sort of non-stretching fabric (any that Jerek mentioned would do) to the area where your plates mount. That should help take the load.

Personally I would back the entire vest, this woulld give the strength across the shoulders where the bulk of the weight is carried.

Couple different things you can try-
1- Make a vest of sturdier material
2- Back your current vest with sturdier material
3- Attach fasteners -of some sort- to your flight suit and vest in order to keep the vest from sagging
