Mejjat's Plastic Bin Armor (WIP)
« on: Aug 19, 2011, 04:09 PM »
Heya everyone,

So after heating and re-heating after they flattened out again (Can't say you guys didn't warn this would happen) my blue plastic bin armor is holding a more human-like shape. Since I'm no expert on the subject, I'm interested in some feedback about the sizing. I've still got enough bin to re-cut them entirely (and tape to hold 'em on.) if need be.

My vest is unfinished, which is why reaches beneath my WIP ammo-belt. Also, is the Hasbro bucket to much on the side of bobble-head?

    Thanks,  ;)

They LOOK good, hard to tell really, the oblique angle of the pic makes it difficult. If anything, you might want to trim the collar down to match the width of the chest plates, it looks a little wide.

Thanks. I hadn't thought about the angle of the pictures, is this one any better?

Spacing and size seems to be pretty much spot on.  Nice work.

Something that may help with shaping...when you go to attach these plates to your vest.  Use LOTS of velcro.  Buy industrial sticky velcro for the armor and sew on velcro for the vest.  DO NOT USE THE STICKY VELCRO ON THE VEST...AS IT WILL EAT YOUR SEWING MACHINE ALIVE.

Don't just outline the plates with velcro, put a lot down.  Try to keep it all about a 1/2 inch from the edge of the plate (so it stays hidden and doesn't peek out from behind a plate if it's on crooked).

Having the plate pretty much covered in velcro and the vest as well, should keep the plates formed up exactly to your body.

To answer your un-answered question, the helmet is a tad on the bobble-head side, but I'm sure that that'll even out when the rest of the suit is done.
Best of luck!

i would give the collar a slight trim on the outside edges to make it in line with the chest plates.

good job so far.

Thanks much for the replies. I've taken a bit off the collar and will keep the Velcro advice in mind.  ;D

Went to K'raam's Armor Party and finished up the paint design:

Hey, I love the color scheme, but maybe you might want to consider leaving the shoulders plain ole' silver. It just kinda... completes the costume, I guess.  ;D
Great work so far, vod.

I agree with Calo... I kinda like the silver shoulders!!!  Weather those up and I think it'd look pretty neat!

I have to say again after seeing your stuff up close at the armor party...you have done an EXCELLENT job with the weathering and masking.  You have a lot of really great weathering detail.  Seeing as you spent the whole day working on the paint for those parts it really shows.

After you paint up the whole set of armor I think a nice blackwash will help add that final touch of realistic grime to the paintjob.

PS, your armor is also very tiny compared to mine.  I swear when you were holding that one piece up it looked like something my kid would wear. XD

Keep up the good work Mejjat!

Thanks! :D

I'd been planning on leaving the the orange off the shoulders and going with black, but after you mentioned it I kinda like the idea of silver. I may see what they look like with just the symbols I was planning on adding.

Kel: Do you mean on the inside of the Hasbro bucket? Because no, that's still there.

Tag: Thanks much, glad to know I'm on the right track. And I'm laughing about the size thing. :P
