Ordeyn's Handgun and Friend (Pic Heavy)
« on: Aug 04, 2011, 10:48 PM »
Hello! I've finished my first kit and I thought I would share my pistol here on the weapon board. It's not very canon because it was an utter scratch build and I wasn't too worried about making it canon because I can't become an official Merc yet anyways.

I began with two pieces of wood and Gorilla glue:

Then I added on a PVC pipe I found in the garage:

I continued adding on things I already had such as old lawnmower filter mesh, a hair dryer "barrel", and (my favorite) parts from curtain hanger supports. This is how I pieced it together:

I proceeded to apply silver paint then finally white paint after weathering. I also added on some grips and what not from extra fabric I had left over from my vest. This is how it turned out:

There you have it! My first gun build, without a plan, and totally scratch.

Not bad at all, although I'd suggest losing the wrapping. It doesn't look so bad on the grip, but the part that goes up over the body looks kind of sloppy. Your best bet would be to chop if off and smooth out the areas it's covering with bondo or the like; I think it'll really improve the overall look of the gun.

Thank you all!

@Slade Kel: I was kind of questioning whether or not to use it up there in the first place, but I think I'm going to do as you suggested. Thank you!

I just ripped everything off. I can always do the handle wrap again if I want to.

I drew my gun to do some concepts and figure out what I'm doing. Blue is for Bondo:

Filling in spaces and making it look better overall. I'll make my sacrifice to the bondo gods and get started today.

I had an idea to spice up the barrel but I'm not sure I really like it enough or if it will just be annoying or how to really go about doing it. I took pictures anyways. I know how y'all love them.

If any one has any ideas to improve my gun feel free to say them. :)

I like the fins idea but you should go to micheals art supply store, or ac moore, or even a hardware store and get some wood strips or even aluminum strip to do them with.  Will look tons better, and maybe some greedbles on the back end where that large flat part is.
There is no problem in life that can not be solved through the proper aplication of high explosives.

I've been saving up Arizona Iced Tea cans so maybe I could used those.

This is a very noobish question but I have heard the word "greedbles" all over the place and yet don't know what exactly that is. What does it mean?

"greebles" or "greebs" (for short) is used here in the costuming forums as just an easy way of saying "random bits".   Usually little interesting bits you find and attach to your costume props to add decorative flare.  The little bits people use can be pieces of all kinds of things:  plastic model kits, computer parts, even hardware items like washers, nuts and bolts.

Generally if you aren't sure what to add to the prop, you could start with thinking about what your prop "does" in the universe of Star Wars.  Let's say it's a blaster.  It probably will have power and/or stun settings, a safety, and possibly sights or even a scope (or 2).  Then you could search around and find something to add onto the blaster to give the weapon the illusion of that function.  Granted most people won't look too closely at the blaster.  But if you take the time to add the details to whatever you build, you can be proud to say "I made this!" Just look at some of the blasters in the weapons armory here, Wookiepedia and other places online to see what kinds of greebles others have used.

Hope that helps!   ;D

If you have access to a hand saw, and wood, I recommend for making those fins out of wood. Home Depot, and Lowes sell small square strips that you can cut and glue. They are cheap if I recall a small quarter of an inch strip, that is three feet long was less then a dollar.

Hand cannon is not a term, but a rule of thumb for weapons.

Thanks for the help guys! I'll see what I can do and get back to you--with pictures too of course. :) Bondo and sanding today for sure.

Make sure the sacrifice is right and proper. Maybe a goat. That way the bondo gods will ensure proper hardening ;).

Your concept art is pretty much spot on to what I was thinking. I'm a little skeptical about the fins, but hey, they worked for Boba, so they can't be a bad idea :D.

Well, my sacrifices must've been just barely good enough. I haven't used that can of bondo for a while but everything seems to be okay. Anyways, I'm not doing the fins. I'm worried they'll come off and I think when I start my holster they'll just be in the way. I do like the idea, but I don't think I can do them on this gun.

I promised pictures:

I took apart my old portable DVD player a while back and pulled that out to see if I could use anything off of it for greebs. And I cut up a piece of white, plastic smelling, wanna-be wood (what's that called?) for more... detailed-ness.

None of that's attached obviously because the bondo isn't done.

@Bazil: you should be proud of me! The little knob is the intensity setting and the small switch is the safety. ;)

Both of which are functional and used to be the volume control  and power switch for the DVD player. The other two little do-dads are just kind of there. How'd I do?
