Soft Parts Question...
The Pandalorian:
Hello, I'm in the middle of making my first set of armor. I decided to go with a 2 piece bdu kind of flight suit. Both the top and bottom are made out of Black Propper Poly /Cotton Twill. When I order the set in an extra small, they were still baggy on me. (I'm 5'5 and only 103 lbs) Luckily enough I was able to get a lady that lives in town to tailor them down to fit me perfectly. My question is, when it comes to vest, what is a good material to make it out of? I want to get it made out of something that won't droop when I attach the plates to it, but I also don't want it to kill me heat wise.....I was thinking more of a heavy cotton or pleather material. Or should I see about making it out of the same material as my bdu set? I'm new so I'm reading through all the post but I will prob still have questions.....
Gabrin Kinoda:
I've used a variety of fabrics and I've been happy with all of it--faux suede, upholstery grade pleather, monkscloth, and moleskin. My only issue with pleather or any other fabric that has a lot of plastic to it is that it doesn't breathe. And with all you're going to be wearing, breathablilty is key. If you go with a lighter fabric, don't forget that you can stiffen it up with interfacing, a second layer of fabric/lining, or even thin batting (I've done all of those, too, lol).
The Pandalorian:
Ok, I appreciate your feedback. What about duck cloth? I've heard of the material but I don't believe I've ever seen any in person. If I have, I didn't know it was duck cloth. The reason I am asking is because someone mentioned it and I wasn't sure about it.
Aysel:
duck cloth is really heavy and you won't need to interface it should you choose not to, (it almost stands up on it's own without startch) it's also not very breathable. My advice would be to take the top part of your flightsuit with you and go fabric shopping to compare weights, you'll also get an idea of what it'll be like when they are layered together.
Vhe Oyre:
Duck cloth is pretty much just another word for strong/heavy cotton material.
