Olivia's WIP Thread
« on: Jun 25, 2011, 10:53 AM »
After seeing all of you guys at comicon for the third year in a row, I've finally decided to start my own Mandalorian costume, so this thread will serve as my work-in-progress (I was going to wait to post this until my armor arrived, but I was just too excited). Please critique anything you think needs adjusting!

I started working on my flightsuit a couple of days ago. I'm using a heavily-modified jumpsuit pattern (it's actually for making adult animal costumes). I chose a medium grey linen-lookalike fabric that seems to have the proper weight and feel. In the picture below, you can see my fabric along with a claw/fang thing I've made out of Sculpey and wire to hang off my belt.

Today I put the zipper in and have started working on my pockets. I plan to have a cargo pants-style pocket on each thigh as well as a smaller version on each bicep. Here's an unfinished pocket:

Exciting news! My helmet from M-DSB arrived today. It looks awesome and feels really sturdy. I'm definitely going to need some padding in there, though.

Anyway, I'm very excited about this whole thing and I'll post more as I get more work done.

My flightsuit is finally finished. Not the most flattering outfit, for sure, but I'm still happy with it. Here are some pictures:

I looked at Home Depot, Ace, and Lowe's for a #5 welding visor, and none of those places had them. The nearest welding supply store was about half an hour away, so I decided to order one online, and it should be arriving around Wednesday. Also, my armor has shipped.

Shortly after updating this thread, my doorbell rang. My K'raam Xrati armor is here! It was like a little treasure hunt going through the box and picking out the individual pieces. Anyway, here's a picture of it with my pug.

Several years ago, I printed out a template from the MandoMaker and colored and designed it, but I've since lost that design, so here's my new version. I'm not sure what color to make the kama and Boba-style cape (I also don't want it to be too fabric-heavy, but I've always loved those two items). I intend the red to merely be an accent color, so I don't really want to make them both red, but maybe one of them.

Also, I don't plan on having my armor colors actually be quite this saturated, so it won't be so bright hopefully.

A bit of an update. I got my visor (the #5 dark green one) and it seems pretty good.

I went fabric shopping today to buy material for the vest and kama (which will match the vest). I decided to go with a dark grey marine vinyl and grey duck cloth to back it for stiffness. The kama will not be made of marine vinyl, because it was really expensive and I also think it's too stiff for the kama. I plan on using a modified cheerleader's top as the pattern, which you can see on top of the marine vinyl below.

Oh, and these are the boots I'd like to use. I have shoe armor to cover the zippers and there are no logos or anything else on them. Do you think they would work?

Love those boots; they have an essence of Boba to them (at least, to my eyes). They'll work perfectly.

As far as closures for the vest, I was hoping that I could have non-functional lacing up both sides, and then have a zipper going down the back. I do have a backplate that will cover most of the zipper, but probably a bit of the top of the zipper would be visible above the plate. Would that be acceptable, or does anyone have any better suggestions?

If you really want to have a zipper in the back, you can add a flap to cover it and add a snap or hook'n'eye to make sure it stays flush where it comes about your armour.

forgot to add maybe try an invisible zipper that seperates may be another option

I personally hate sewing invisible zippers,  but I'm known to also be rather...not fond of sewing in regular zippers too lol

I'll be watching this thread to see how your cheerleader-turned-Mandomvest works out lol I've been looking for a pattern to make that easier :)

I like the boots and I LOVE the color plan :) very nice. Also good work on the flight suit. Can't wait to see more :)

I also positively hate invisible zippers and I also have two layers of thick material, so I think an invisible zipper would make me crazy. So I'll probably just do a flap over a regular zipper. I'm currently making a mock up of the pattern so I don't waste my more expensive material, and it's not too bad so far, but the pattern seems to run quite large.

Interesting color choices, I can't wait to see what exactly you plan to do on the real one.

This is looking really good, Olivia :) .  Can't wait to see how it all turns out.

(this is Tabitha, the other Jedi at PCC) I'm going to make a kit too.  Maybe we can hang out at con next year in our kits :) .
