JR's First Armor
« on: Jun 14, 2011, 09:59 PM »
First I am looking for some feedback on these MandoMaker designs. I have no experience in Mando Armor so I want to make sure I won't stand out. Also I don't want to discover half way though that I am painting my armor like someone else's pre-existing armor.

Armor, Boots, most of Bucket, and Kama: Desert Sand 500
Flight Suit, Vest, and the rest of the Bucket: Urban Gray 501
Markings & Symbols on armor / bucket: Foliage Green 502
Lights & Sensors: Red #A61733

the first one to me just seems like the red on the helmet sticks out from the rest of it. i think it would look awesome with red gauntlets and knees. the last one has a really good flow to it. cant wait to see your kit started

Ill be honest, its maddening plain. Have you looked at other finished kits? The costume gallery here on the forum or the facebook page is a good place to look.  Id say give it another shot. Keep this in mind though. Who is your mando, what does he do, and where does he do it.

But if this is what you really want by all means, go for it. Im not slapping you down at all, just trying to make sure you get what you want.

My first kit was all white, everything, white. Was it plain? yes, but alot of people liked it including myself. You don't have to go all out mixing and matching colors to make a good looking set of armor.

JR, I like the 3rd design best, but go with what you like the best as you will be the one wearing it.

Instead of spamming this tread, I am going to try and reply to all the messages at once. I will use red to help.

The colors from most to least are: Tan #D2B48C , Sage #9EA587 , and Cranberry #A61733

For at least a week there were only the first 2 designs. Then when Annie saw them she made some suggestions and #3 was born, which is now my favorite. So while I know that the final decision is mine, outside advice has already made it better.

Yes it is plain now, but that's because there are no weathering, weapons, or tools. My Mando will be a Combat Engineer so he does not want to stand out in a desert, but a convention is completely different. Also I am a Tool Freak so that's where my Mando will really stand out. Making a lot of tools is what I am most looking forward to, and maybe an unusual weapon for a Mando will give him backstory?

I plan to start it at the next Talon Armor party, as long as it's not on July 16th which is the 3rd Saturday.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I appreciate all the feedback because this is what I am looking for so thank you.

itsn ot a bad color scheme some mercs have done something similair, I suggest add little accents of a dark color here and there but that can be done with the weathering, get started on building, got a nice plan going so far

No. Not to the gun but the back-story.

You kit has to scream what you are. Very few people will know your back-story and you dont want to have to justify way you have and do the things you do. They should be able to tell just by looking at you. You can still write one and place it on the wiki once you become offical though. club members like that kind of stuff.

having a back-story is not required for a good build, just a good idea of what you want to do and keeping at it, back-story can be made later after your build

I would go so far as to say having no backstory is good for producing a better build. That way you can focus on letting the armor blossom on it's own rather than being wrangled in by a preconceived notion and ending up with silly things like lightsabers, throwing stars and katana's.

With such a good quantity of good quality feedback, I am going to have to keep with the red so I don't have to double post.

It's as if you read my mind. When I get to the weathering I am going to add burn marks from welding. My Mando is a Combat Engineer after all, and in real life I have had to throw away a lot of things that have gotten burned from hardhats all the way down to my boxers! Once I dated a firefighter and one of the gifts she gave me was a pair of boots and gloves from the same batch she uses at work. They caught fire while I was using them welding! So I think that dark accents that look like burn marks would be perfect, right?

No. Not to the gun but the back-story.

Sounds like I will fit right in the club! ;D

Sure, I'm just throwing around ideas.

I appreciate the support. 8)

OK, the throwing stars and Katana being silly is self evident and requires no explaining because I completely understand and I completely agree. They are Earth weapons and if I saw them on a Mando I would not be able to get the 2 G. I. Joe Ninjas out of my mind and that would be bad. But I do not understand why Lightsabers are silly?

You can have a lightsaber hilt hanging from your belt, but you can't use a fully-bladed lightsaber unless you are one of the 3 mandos who were written/shown using a lightsaber.  Those are Venku Skirata, Bardan Jusik, and Pre Vizsla.  Lightsabers make people think Jedi/Sith, and we don't want people thinking Mandos are either.

I was actually hoping this would come up because it is something I have been wondering about and it's lead to many discussions in one of my gaming groups. We've talked about Venku Skirata, Bardan Jusik, and Pre Vizsla; and where their alliances lie. On top of that, the Clone Wars plot with the planet where there's the Sith like son, Jedi like daughter, and then there's the father. It has left me with many questions and not knowing where to go to get answers. Hasn't there been other characters besides the father that used the force without being Jedi or Sith?

Sure there are force sensitive folks...but you have to keep in mind that just because they are force sensitive it doesn't mean they have honed talents.  Remember that Jedi are trained from a very young age on how to use their powers.  A regular person who is force sensitive may never even realize they are and may just have certain attributes like "flies really well" or "always seems to have eyes on the back of his head" or "is really lucky".

A lot of the negative stigma that you get from mixing the force and mandalorians is that mandos have fought against the Jedi before in canon and it's made for bad blood between the two.  It's also a thing of "having your cake and eating it too"...having a force sensitive character with some of the best armor available in the galaxy.
