Chro's Gaunts, now iPod compatible and less shooty.
Chro:
Set to work fixing up my gaunts todee. They're pretty simple metal things, each made of two pieces of cut metal with a rivet joining the two halves together so they can open and flex.
Only problem is that they will sometimes open up on me during wear so I set about a simple fix: Velcro.
Next step is some greebs. I like the simple, stripped down look on these instead of the usual Boba and Jango toolkits, but they do need something on there to make them more interesting. I'm thinking a keypad and some kind of dart launcher or medkit thing would do.
Ori Dart:
You could always throw on a laser pointer type of thing or just a flashlight. Maybe even a cleverly hidden digital clock so you know what time it is when you're trooping?
Slade Kel (Marrok):
If you want a simple, streamlined look, don't even worry about dart launchers and keypads. What you can do is take 3mm sintra (or even more of whatever you used to make them) and create an overlay that can be glued on top.
For example:
It's a little hard to see here because I haven't finished painting and weathering, but the gauntlet on the right is 22gauge steel with a 22gauge overlay on top, you can sort of see the line right now. I'm thinking of doing something a little more intricate with it, but haven't decided yet.
Alternately, the one on the left just has part of a Death Watch gauntlet velcro'd on top, the which also needs to be painted. You could do something similar, maybe even with several smaller overlays on each gauntlet, something to make it less bland, but still streamlined.
Chro:
Been a while, but I finished up some modifications to my gauntlets and I think I'm ready to call at least one of them done.
For the left one, I decided to stick my ipod on there. Seeing as the ipod touch and ipad (along with other smartphone-esque things) are essentially datapads, I figure it's fair. And I can play fruit ninja in armor now.
Started off at the dollar store, found a $1 clear ipod case and a cheapo digital watch as a sub-par backup in case I failed horribly, but I didn't.
Glued the case on with some Gorilla epoxy, then cut some cardboard to frame it all up.
Now, before you say it's upside down, the majority of applications don't care which way they're oriented, except Fruit Ninja, which wants the round button to the right. Also, when my arm is bent so I can read the thing (or when showing it to someone), it ends right side up.
I coated it with plastidip, then a thin coat of Rustoleum plastic paint (same as on the main gauntlet), and voila:
Now I can check the boards while on a troop without digging out something that will be instantly identified as an earth-phone. And play Fruit Ninja.
I haven't decided what to put on my other gauntlet, but the laser sight idea struck home with me so I slapped on a mounting rail.
It's also attached with the Gorilla epoxy. I have a few old laser sights and flashlights kicking around. With this I can change them out when I get tired of them, and at the very least it makes my right arm a little more interesting.
Larmos Vikarr:
I actually really like this. I know the CRL's say something about no exposed ipod's or phones though right? Is this something acceptable? It's really pretty neatly hidden and I'm sure an app could pretty easily be written to do things a merc might do while on the job with his/her data pad.
