Question about gauntlets
« on: Jan 15, 2011, 10:42 AM »
I picked up some vacuum form gauntlets yesterday and I find that they could use some reinforcing, just to strengthen and make them a bit heavier.  Would you suggest using fiberglass, bondo or something else?  Any help will be greatly appreciated!  :)

Alot of folks use fiberglass. I prefer to use PlastiDip.

Never heard of PlasticDip.  What is it, where do I get it and how do I use it?  Sorry for so many questions!   :P

It's alright. Most big Home Improvement stores sell it in the paint isle next to the spray paint. It comes in a can you can dip or pour or it comes in a spray paint like can to spray it on. It is a liquid latex rubber that made it's mark as a non slip heat/cold resistant coating for handles on hand tools. But, it has so many uses! Many Clones in the 501st use it to paint the black band on their helmets. i found it works great to strength thin vacc'd plastics. If you get the can type, you simply pour a small amount on, slosh it around, let it set and repeat a2 to 3 times. They should all be thin coats so it dries faster and more even. If you get the spray type you spray 2-4 thin coats on. It adds a bit of rigidity and helps prevent tears on edges. Also, if you drop them, they drop crack or split, they bounce... seriously!

All i did with my vac form gaunts was fix them like TK gaunts , I riveted them together but gave myself space to slip them on . They work great without having to re-inforce with any method . They dont swivel but if they did just glue some rubber or other to the insides .

I found after installing the hinge and painting them they seemed to feel thicker and more secure.
