Flight Suit Questions
« on: Jan 14, 2011, 02:33 PM »
Hey all. I just recently joined the site, and am collecting items for my kit. One thing I was wondering for those who decided to use a more fitted clothing for the flight suit is this.. how did you fix the thigh armor onto it if you used it? I was thinking maybe I could add a piece of material the same as my vest to that area to make it stay better.

Thoughts?

I use leather straps.

ok. another question. On the CRL's it has that whatever is used as a flightsuit needs to look like a flightsuit. I am leaning towards a more fitted suit like I've seen some of the ladies around here using, and I was wondering what are the rules for that if any? I am not the most comfortable in baggy clothing, and I figure it will be less comfortable once I add armor to it.

Suggestions?

I've seen a few use Under Armor as their 'flightsuit' The stipulations there being that whatever you use as straps for your leg armor and such need to match the color of your flightsuit as much as possible. If you use under armor, all logo must be covered. The cool thing about using under armor is that its easy to do a two-piece flightsuit. For the upper body armor, that will be on the vest. The plates can be attached with industrial strength velcro, or chicago screws.

If I'm off on my advice, somebody tell me, k? ;)

Hey Callista, thanks for the imput. I've seen some use track suits and the like. I want my kit to look good and be as comfy as possible at the same time, so I'm trying to get a good idea of what is acceptable before I go buy something to use and it won't work. I have finally found a two piece flightsuit tutorial online by Verdaera, but my sewing skills aren't really that good. So I do have that as an option, but I hope to find something that I can use until my skills get better with practice.

For my undersuit, I use skinny jeans and long sleeve shirt that match in shade and appearance. They work great together and you can't tell with all the armor and plates on. ;)

I personally wouldn't recommend using tracksuits or sweats. Neither would pass CRL's - to my knowledge. You want something sturdy, but that fits well and isn't overly bulky. You can get flightsuits off ebay for not too much, or check your local Army/Navy surplus store. I would suggest trying to find a place locally, as you can try stuff on to see how it fits :)

Or, as Solus said, try to find two items of clothing that are close in color. :)

I didn't want to go with a tracksuit not only because I didn't think it would work for the CRL's, but also I'm in florida, and I think I would pass out from heat exhaustion. That is not something I want. I was looking at yoga clothes as options, but they seem to be too flimsy maybe. I think I might have to talk to a friend of mine who is a seamstress and see if she could help me put together the two piece one I found the tutorial for.

Sounds like a good idea :) Do you have any armor concept drawings yet? :)

i have it in my head but lack the skill to put it to paper, so I'm going to see if I can get my Photoshop to cooperate long enough to pull the mando maker image into it and work with it to put my colors at least on it.

Two piece tracksuits are allowed in the CRL's, I believe. Xian uses one for her's. Of course, since you do live in FL, I can agree with you not wanting to go that route.

My suit consists of an under armor shirt, and cargo pants of the same color. Super comfy, and much easier to get in and out of.

ok. here is my tinkering around in photoshop to get the basic colors i'm thinking about.

Still debating on colors, and the "flightsuit" I'm thinking maybe a chocolate brown. The vest and boots will be black, though i made them lighter in the image to show up better.

I'd flip the gauntlet colours, possibly go with yellow knees as well.

Kama AND (half) cape might be a bit on the overkill side.

Maybe flip the flightsuit and kama/cape colours too, that way you wear the lighter colour on your body.
less heat absorption on you and a lighter overall appearance... just a thought.

Kama and half cape rock,  my wife has a kama and half cape and it really sets off the flow of movement.

here is the CRL for the flightsuit
2.Flight suit:
◦You must have a properly fitted/tailored flight suit or comparable under-armor clothing.
◦One or two piece flight suit designs are acceptable.
◦Non-flight suit style under-armor clothing must be comparable to a flight suit (We should not be able to tell the difference).
and here is the don'ts list
The DON’T List:
These items/concepts should not be used in your custom Mandalorian costume character.
1.No soft armor/Halloween costumes/Mando pajamas
2.No tennis shoes/sneakers
3.No visible zippers or closures on flight suit/under-armor unless considered part of the costume’s look
4.No jeans, t-shirts, sweat suits, etc. used as under-armor
5.No Jedi-Mandos or Sith-Mandos. “Force-adept” or “Force-sensitive” Mandos are acceptable.
6.No stiletto boots. Platform boots are acceptable.
so basically tracksuits ie: sweats won't be acceptable. as long as you follow these guidelines you shouldnt have any problems. good luck  ;)
