Flak vest patterns
« on: Nov 18, 2010, 05:11 AM »
Hi girls

I was on here a couple of months ago and there was a couple of patterns for the female flak vests, as i'm finding it nigh impossible to buy one outright i have a shiney new sewing machine thats begging to be used. Just wondering if anyone has said patterns or could point me in the right direction at least , my bes'kar gam is looking very sad and sorry for itself in a box in the corner next to my TK.

HELP PLEASE !

Lotsa love Luci XD

Start with a normal dress shirt pattern for the collar and uppermost chest.  Create a boob-space segment from scratch (three panels, one rectangular, and two nearly rectangular but with a single curved edge that gets sewn onto the middle rectangle), then the rest of the vest: Simplicity 9966 for an underbust corset.  The boob-space panel connects at the top of the underbust corset and to the bottom of the dress shirt patterned piece.

I'm winging it!  I bought cheap-o, men's undershirts that fit me snug, then cut up each side to the armholes.  I cut at an angle just below each armhole and just inside of the arm seams.  Then, cut around seam of sleeve as close as possible (shoulder bell attachment).  I also shortened the shirt a bit.  Then, layout on fabric of choice (mine was pleather).  Pin all of the way around, making sure to stretch shirt as you go.  Trace with a sharpie or just cut around...be sure to leave 1/2-3/4 inch seam allowances.  Remove undershirt.  Cut 'tabs' around neck hole and iron to set in.  I also cut out 'boob' openings.  I found a lid to a storage container that was a bit smaller than my girls.  I traced around and cut out.  Again, cut tabs and iron down to flatten.  Make a 2nd 'vest' for the inside.  Repeat process.  Match up the two, pin and sew.  Start from the inside and work out.  I have only sewn neck and boobs so far.  Keep an eye out on my WIP if you want more instructions (or pm me) as I am trying to update as I go!!  Good luck!  By the way...I am not a seamstress...I have barely sewn a stitch in my life!!

Use a cheerleader vest pattern.  Works well for a female Mando vest, and males.  We just need to use a little LESS fabric than female vests, lol.

I know the t-shirt method seems complicated...I thought so too at first.  But, I have VERY little in the way of sewing skills, have never used a pattern, etc. I made an apron in high school (straight lines only-15 years ago) and a basic skirt (sew the top, sew the bottom, and string through elastic at the waist and close the hole).  That is why I liked the t-shirt...no measuring or calculating anything!!  I have sewn holes for the girls to go through (I will have a shirt underneath and armour on top to cover), this way there are no darts, etc. to mess with.  If you want basic, you don't have to add any extras.  If you have questions...pm me!  Good luck!
