Well, I suppose it's better to take your time and do it right than it would be to throw it all together and look like a pair of boots shined with a bag of crap.
I'm iffy; it might alleviate the unrelievedness of it, or it might just look superfluous. My first impulse is to suggest some weathering; minor dings and scrapes and a bit of carbon scoring or blackwash. I wish I could give a detailed how-to, but my own method is sort of catch as can catch, no real step-by-step method to it. Stormtrooperguy has a pretty good weathering video on his site here: http://www.stormtrooperguy.com/workshop/Weathering_video that does a great job of walking you through weathering. It's how he weathers his clonetrooper armor, but given that it's white and blue, it's sort of poignant .
