attaching ear pieces etc to helmet
« on: Apr 10, 2010, 12:36 PM »
Hi I was searching around for some tips for the best methods of attaching ear pieces etc to a helmet. (clamps used, epoxy etc.) If there already is a tutorial thread on this that I didn't locate, the link would be great.  I have a gypsyboy helmet that I'm getting around to finishing up before Star Wars Day at a baseball game here in Iowa. Thanks,
GeyJohn

For the left and lower right ear cap, you could use epoxy, E-6000, or you could bolt them on.  Here's a tutorial for bolting the ears on:

Bolt Attachment Method

And for the upper right ear cap, if you have a rangefinder stalk there, you could make it removable for transportation by using the magnet method.  Here's a thread on TDH on doing that, go to the 8th picture down to see how he attached his ear cap:

Magnet Attachment Method

Also, here's Novall's tutorial on doing the magnet method, it's more in-depth than the TDH thread:

Novall's Magnet Method

I personally just glued my earcaps on my helmet, although I wish I had bolted them on so that I could more easily transfer them to a new helmet after I upgrade, but I'm lazy.   :P

My magnet method works with any type of small magnet, but if you can't get a hold of small hard drive mags then I suggest using tiny rare earth mags.

Magnets are GREAT! The big advantage to having them is that they never wear out (I use them for everything). Also, with the ear cap you can always take it off and remove the rangefinder for ease of storage in your bin without worrying about it getting damaged in the shuffle. :)

Hes not kidding. Will's solution to everything is "MAGNETS AND MORE MAGNETS!"
However in this case hes right, theyre the best way to go for this job in my opinion.

Looks like the route I'm probably going to take.  I've gotten alot better with the very tiny dremmel bits while cleaning out key slots.
Thanks everyone.

Where can I find "rare earth magnets"  or are they just common magnets with a fancy name?

You can get them at Wal-Mart in the craft section, or at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc.  Sometimes they're called "neodymium" or just "neo" magnets on the packaging.

Just found them online Rath, Just looking at how thick the earcap is in relation to drilling out a hole for the magnet.  The piece that attaches to the helmet is plenty thick.  Velcro would probably stand out too much? Just trying a few things.
