It's a girth belt.  It's not required for CRL approval (Other than on certain canon characters), but if you're a chunky-built kind of guy, and/or have a large gap south of your belly plate, you need a girth belt to cover that gap.

Plus it's cool.   :P

In my opinion be a big, tall, skinny, or short guy. The girth belt helps draw the kit together completely all the time. It might just be me but whenever I see kits without something there they usually seem to be lacking to me. Its just that odd sense most of the time of... " somethings missing?..." That I get so if I were you I'd get/make a girth or something in similar. But again its your kit.

I assume it tends to look like something is missing because we're used to seeing Boba and Jango, both of whom have girth belts. I personally like girths, regardless of their make (rope, fabric, another larger leather belt, etc). Definitely helps tie things together, and, like Ori said, can help cover a gap that may exist in the armor.

But, really, it is optional. And unless there's a gap that needs to be covered, I don't think anybody would say anything about there not being one.

The thing with the girthbelt is that you look at look kits and you think "needs a girth belt". If the kit truly doesn't need one, you don't think that. My husband doesn't use one, I might try to slip downstairs and get a picture of his kit if the baby decides to nap.
