Looks much better now that the ab plate is notched to go into the shape of the opening the bottom tabs of the chest create.

Definitely an improvement ;D. Once you have it out of plastic and the plates mounted properly, it'll look much better with the ab plate fitting neatly between the chest plates. It's good that you've taken the time to get the templates settled, and that you're willing to take constructive criticism and suggestions :).

My own first couple of kits were done with a lot of trial and error on the actual plates. I probably put in dozens of extra work hours that could have been avoided if I'd fiddled with the templates before moving on to the actual plates. Trust me, doing it this way saves a lot of time and effort compared to what some of us did on our first few attempts.

Luke: Do we have a baradium missile?
Ben: Sorry, Uncle Han said it was always a good idea to have one--

Here's the new and improved (?) chest and belly armor. The belly plate needs more weathering or something but I have no idea what to do with it.

Other than that, how'd I do?

I'm not wanting to do a full back piece so I'm taking inspiration from Tomoe in how she made the back armor out of several seperate pieces. Anyone know where I can find pics to reference off of? I got a couple good pics of Tomoe's back plates but I'm wanting others to draw further inspiration from.

Kyran Koter has one... A member in Hawaii had an Open Seasons grunt doing similar.. Those are all I can think of.

I think Drago from NWC had one, but I could be thinking of somebody else. I had one made but never completely worn (tossed the shoulder plates and just kept the lower back plate). I think there are some others I've seen recently, but can't remember who (downside of browsing so many threads >_<).

Slade has one: http://mercs.firespray.net/forum/index.php?topic=25120

Ti'Mesh is working on one: http://mercs.firespray.net/forum/index.php?topic=22164.msg372579#msg372579

Those are the only ones I can actually recall and find images of.

I've also got a sketch for a heavy armored, but segmented back/spinal/kidney plate bit if you want it.

Heh, that back plate went from three pieces to six, twelve, etcetera, until that final version has, I think, thirty pieces. It has since been replaced with a one-piece Fett-style back-plate, courtesy of the Imperial Outpost Armory, our own Redkraytdragon. With a little minor tweaking, it fits perfectly, and, in all honesty, a solid back plate doesn't make a difference when it comes to flexibility, unless you're in the habit of literally bending over backward.

Ain't it crazy how some things evolve when the inspiration hits? As a fat kid, I don't see myself tryin' to bend over backwards unless absolutely necessary. I'm just really partial into a multiple piece set of back armor.
The link that Kora gave me to Ti'Mesh's WIP has what I think is an awesome set of back plates and I took that as inspiration for mine. Thing is, I haven't gotten clearance from him to run with his idea so I'm not posting images of what I came up with nor am I gonna start a build. He has a pic of what I've done but I'm gonna wait for his blessing before I go any further.

Looking at the pics from Ti'Mesh's build, here's what I came up with for my back plates...

The black lines are simply there to show the individual plates after taping 7 sheets of graph paper together. It was easier to make sure they'd all fit together. Bottom corner of the right kidney plate curled up grr :)
