Dryl Thrysa's first build
« on: May 10, 2010, 04:31 PM »
I'm using 1/4in plexi and pieces of car bumper for my armor after using WoF Jango Fett armor templates in XL. The chest pieces look kinda small as of now so I may have to remake those.
The practice run with a heat gun to bend the plastic went much better and easier than I was afraid of.
Here's where my dumb questions that I've been tossing out here and there continue:

1.   When bending the shoulder bells \___/, what's a good angle?
2.   Is the front plate for the shin armor just glued onto the rest of the plate?

Once I get the stuff bent (probably tomorrow) I'll get it duct taped in place and get some pics on here for critique and further advice.

I won't lie and say there's no such thing as a dumb question, but as it stands, these aren't dumb.

For the bells, I just curve them around my upper arm. As for the shin, yep, most folk just glue that strip onto the front. Many leave it off altogether, and some simple bend the metal/shape the plastic to give the illusion that there is a front plate, when is all just one piece.

You can either curve the shoulder armor or do two bends.  The amount of bend depends on how big your shoulders are.  You're going to have to bend and then check.

On the Jango armor, the whole armor plate is molded in fiberglass, so technically it's one piece.  I've seen some simulate it with two sharp bends, others will just glue a piece onto the front, yes.  Either is acceptable.

I didn't think to mention that you could also glue it on the front, then hit the sides of the front plate with bondo or F'glass to give it that one-piece loook.

Question:

Can the collar plate be in two pieces? I cut mine too long but didn't realize this after getting it heated and bent. In order to "take it in", I was thinking of taking out a portion of the center

Something like this

So far I have the collar, shoulder, bicep and chest plates ready for paint. They've been sanded, primered, resanded, primered and resanded once more which went ridiculously easy.
If I remember correctly, I saw or read a tutorial that recommended a layer of a metallic paint and then several coats of clear. That way, when weathered, the main color is removed, leaving what appears to be metal underneath. I'm using Krylon Brushed Aluminum, great coverage and sanded well for a second coat. Did my first coat of clear today and once it's good and dried tomorrow, I'm gonna hit it with 400 wet/dry to smooth it out and apply a second coat of the clear (weather permitting).

Am I doing everything right so far?

Are these authorized? I'm catching all sorts of osik shaping my lower leg armor and found these for less than $15.00. I'm more than willing to fill in the logo and holes. pleasesomeonesayyespleasesomeonesayyespleasesomeonesayyes

they could be used but, they'll need some slight mods. To make them look less like they are what they are I would...

1. Seperate the knee and shin into 2 distinct pieces
2. fill and smooth and divets, designs etc in the molds
3. replace all the strapping with leather belt strapping

no sports armor is techically baned from club use. it all just requires extensive modding, with the exception of those laid out in the recent addendums.

THAT I can do. I was thinking of removing the strapping entirely and just doing the velcro thing vs using leather tho

always a good way to go but often with knees to get them to hang right some kind of strapping is necessary to keep them on the knee, but you can get fancy and have that internally on the flightsuit, depends on your tailor.

OH FIERFEK!!!!1!!
I painted a mythosaur skull onto my left shoulder plate... Just realized I put it on backwards. Do I have to re-do it or can I be a non-conformist?

Nevermind... I just used Goo Gone to remove the spray adhesive and removed the whole kriffing thing. Time to break out the sand paper and start over

wonder if anyone would have noticed so long as it's not upside down :)
