Sy'rus Drayven's Armor vest. (WIP) Painted
« on: Sep 16, 2010, 06:59 PM »

My first armor vest, Plates are made from a Plastic tote and attached with Velcro. Wasn't nearly as difficult or as expensive as I'd thought it would be. The Plates have yet to be painted. I was planning on gunmetal grey. (any pointers on painting would be appreciated too) So what do you guys think?

Looks perfect to me, other than the spacing that you said was now fixed. Isn't Velcro all sorts of handy-dandy? haha. Just look around the armor and helmet forum for a while before you start painting. You can find all sorts of threads on ways to paint that make giving it weathering a lot easier and cooler.

As far as painting, I have not worked directly with the plastic totes before, except to use them as plastic totes ;) but I believe a light sanding to rough up the surface of the plates (you might want to try to remove the sharpie labelling, sometimes sharpie will bleed through a paint job) followed by a paint that is intended for plastics, such as Krylon Fusion, should do you just fine.

I can't tell if your collar and upper edges of the chest plates might be a touch wide, but you could probably trim a little bit off the outer edges if you feel like your arm movement is unduly impeded. I like the belly plates.

Honestly, I like how it is now. You should just keep it as is, with belly and shoulder and whatever else you have written on it. Gives it a certain... personal touch! :P haha

Looks like you've got a good start on things, but from the pictures the plates look oversized for your frame. You need to do a bit of trimming. Keep up the great work.

I trimmed the outside edges of the chest plates by about 3/4 of a cm. I'll have pictures up shortly.

Me too... lol. You'll laugh, but its gun metal grey Engine Enamel from NAPA. Its terrific. It dries fast and has a bit of a metallic quality to it.

SWEET! :) Thats awesome!
It looks like you have a bit chipping off in the center by the diamond. Does it chip easier than standard spray paints or about the same?

It flakes off on the edges if it impacts something. But I have silver enamel underneath and it just looks natural It seems liek it naturally weathers quite nicely.

So I trimmed the plates and decided they were still lacking something. So I added some stuff. The chest plates still like to sneak up on the collar piece. I'll have to fix that.
