Bazii Malric's Scratch built gauntlets DONE!!!
« on: Feb 13, 2010, 10:57 PM »
Well as I have started on my gauntlets a while ago I though I should at least give them their own thread.  Well for my gaunts, I began with 4inch PVC pipes and dremeled the basic shape out with that.  Then I attached the hinges.  First I attached the hinges on the outside.  Then thought about it, and followed someone else's advice: I put the hinges inside the gaunts and added velcro as a closure device.  After that I did nothing to them for like a month or so.  I was unsure of how to do what I want to do with them.  :)

Eventually I got around to attaching a couple minor things.  The right gauntlet is going to have a dual blaster, and tranq darts on it.  The left will have the flame thrower, a computer and either a blade or another dual blaster on it.

I got the flame thrower attached on the left and the dual blaster on the right...  and not much else right now.

Here are some pics of my progress as it is:

Great start man! We need to get you out to visit some day where we can see all this in person.. I kid you not, 3 hours with triker and your kit will morph before your eyes into something much beyond what you thought you could do...

Liking the piping though, works well for weathering :D

Well I got next to nothing done but at least I tore apart an old cell phone and glued the parts onto the gauntlet.  Yeah ME!  well at least I can look like that I have a computer on my armor now.  Eventually I will add more plastic and/or bondo to blend in to the gauntlet more and then will come the painting and weathering.

Working nicely.. I'm not sure i've seen someone do quite what you did, but nice goin! We may try and see if we can make you a clear transparency of some sort of techno mumbo jumbo or such to go over the screen to make ti look functional.

looking sweet so far. My new (third set) of guants are gonna be made with PVC too. I like the blaster but the flamethrower looks crooked and weird to me.

thanks,  Yeah the flame thrower is supposed to be somewhat crooked, it needs to be in order to point forward correctly when I wear it.  one of the pipes is bent so they both converge as if there were two different chemicals being mixed to create a hotter flame... or at least that's the way I envision it.  :)

Got minor progress here...  first layer of bondo applied to begin the blending of the pieces together.  So far just on the left guantlet though.  I got a little sidetracked on a fun project I came up with on the fly:  verpine assault gun from some of the blasters I have found form my parents house.  I plan on at least getting both gaunts covered in bondo so i can begin what I assume to be a lot of sanding in my near future.  But this will have to wait until the next days off... thursday.  I will hopefully post more pics when I can get back at it.

DOH!   >:(

Okay I am fed up with trying to use bondo.  Yeah I probably shouldn't have put so much on the gaunts and all, but despite power sanding and sanding, and sanding...  I am getting nowhere, and it looks not so good.  Well I decided to go with a much simplier design instead.  Just went out and got myself a 5 gallon silver bucket and, cut and shaped it into a simple wrap.  I may attempt to put a computer on this one but it will be from underneath so I don't have to bondo anything this time.  Sorry no pics at the moment, my camera was MIA until finding it today.  I did do a quick sketch of what I want to do with the new gaunts.  Would like some feedback on the two ideas I have for my gaunts if possible.

Just prepare yourselves for my artistic awesomeness  lol

I haven't thrown the old ones out yet as i still have hopes of being able to resurrect them at some point.  For now I'll go with a simplier way.  One that is better within my skill level.   ;)

EDIT:  LOL  I forgot to upload the sketch I did earlier.  Here it is now.

I bet if you can get those gaunts to me and Triker, we can get them fixed up.. The man is a veritable wizard with bondo.

New gauntlets are cut, shaped, and mostly weathered.  I am leaning towards going with the option 2 closure since I painted some designs on them, and option 1 may cover them up.  I decided to keep these as simple bracers and work on my other gauntlets later...  when I can get some help with my bondo problem, or I can find the number to my operator to have him upload the skills via the matrix.   ;)

Bazii, I feel your pain. I didn't think I would have problems with my gauntlets, but I ran into the bondo headaches that you did. I saw a video tutorial of how to use bondo and it looked so easy. It proved to be harder than in looks. I think I too will go with the bracer idea rather than complex gaunts. Let me know if you get in touch with that operator.    ;)  Lol.  I wish you the best of luck and will watch your progress.

Gauntlets are DONE!!  WOOT!!    ;D

The gauntlets have a bit of velcro inside them, this is to hold them steady on my arm so they don't move.  the parachute buckles work great to hold it together...  now.  I had a heck of a time getting the bolts to cooperate with me and not interfere with the buckles snapping shut.  I had to find the balance with the tightness of the bolts and having it not smoosh the buckles preventing them from snapping together.  hence I added a little amazing goop to them to hold them still.  they shall not move now.  Also got them weathered up...  just have to wait for the amazing goop I used to secure things to dry and cure before I go and try them on...  as I would like to be able to take them off eventually.   ;D  lol

Future upgrades will be to attempt to fix my original gaunt designs or maybe get some gaunts that are made by someone else.  I do kinda like the Clone trooper gaunts and may go that route and/or the fetts' style of gauntlets.
