armor classes: light, medium, heavy

(1/21) > >>

Hondo Karr:
some questions have arisen in regards to armor classification... ie light , medium, heavy. so in an attempt to help clarify the situation, i'm creating this post.

here are some photo examples...

boba fett (as we should all know  ;)) this is light armor.
this is the minimum armor coverage required or the club.

jango fett (we should also know lol) this is medium armor.
beyond boba, he has thighs, shin and boot armor

here's me  ;D heavy armor
what i have beyond a jango base are...
bicep armor
collar
armored gloves
elbows
full boot armor (made up of 4 pieces which cover the toes, top of foot and heel)
shoulder bells
kama

i had a bow out on my flightsuit pants in phoenix so, i'm getting the velcro sewn on my new ones now. once theyre done, i'm going to resuit up for new pix as there have been changes since these photos from earlier this month. significant changes are the biceps are now fully enclosed instead of outsides only, new armored gloves tht actually look to have heavier aror but give me much more dexterity and i've repainted the boot armor so it will show up better against the boots.

here's a'den gratua from manda'galaar: heavy (sorry i cant find the pic with his boot armor?)
this is more of a "light-heavyy" as the top 1/2 is very heavily armored while the bottom 1/2 is comparable to jangos
what he has beyond jango...
heavy gorget plate/pauldrons
scaled bicep armor

i can't find a good, unobstructed view of novall talon in his current armor. hopefully he or someone else will see this and provide me with one for this thread.
for those familiar or not with his current armor, it is classed as heavy, although he's set up in a modular format that allows him to go down to light. beyond jango fett, he has the following...
cape (in addition to, not in lieu of, a backplate)
bicep armor
armored gloves
extended thigh plates
enclosed shins

some questions arose as to neo crusaders as they had been compare to clone and stormtrooper armor as being for an infantry based armor. not all neo crusaders wore heavy armor but, there have been no canon references of anything less than medium to light heavy armor. the typical neo armor consisted of..
helmet and mask with an unknown fabric, that allowed for movement but still had armor like qualities, cowl
full torso armor
heavy shoulders
some, not all, wore bicep armor
some, not all, wore e lbow armor
gaunts
many had armored gloves
many had extended thigh plates
few, if any, are seen with knee's
fully enclosed greaves
heavy boot armor
many are seen with kama's or/and loincloth

some characteristics that heavy modern era mandalorian armor should have beyond a typical jango set are, but not limited too...
neck armor
biceps
elbows
armored gloves
kama
pauldron
double or/and bell shoulders in lieu of typical modern era shoulder plates
one of more pieces of fully enclosed armored such as boots, greaves, thighs.

obviously there are other things that could be added or considered to add the heavy class to your armor. adding any one of these componants to a medium set would not class your armor as heavy. adding  2 or 3 may not either, depending on what the pieces are and how theyre mixed. for example, adding a kama and armored gloves to a jango set does not a heavy mando make. however, adding enclosed biceps and greaves to a jango set MAY be classed as heavy. taking that a step further and adding elbows and armored gloves certainly does. the key is to add as many componants as possible without looking like you can't possibly move, even though you probably won't be able to!

modern era mandalorian heavy armor could be as fully enclosed as clone armor however, it does not have to be as that partially goes against the methodology of the modern era mandalorian armor desire which is maximum protection of vital area's vs. maximum mobility.

Thank you... This answers all my questions here... If you don';t mind, expect a PM coming your way.

you know that's no prob!

basically, the key is to attaining "heavy" armor is to not leave large area's of unarmored body. in the case of the fett's armor, from the shoulder until just below the elbow, it's completly bare. the backs of the legs are completly bare as well. and so are the hands. as you start filling those area's in and leaving less exposed area, you come closer and closer to heavier armor.

personally, after what happened to jango fett in aotc, i don't think any mando should be without some type of neck armor!

the closest canon reference we have to a heavy moder era mandalorian armor coms from the legacy mandalorians. there armor consists of:
helmet
scaled segmented torso armor, chest plates are connected to the gorget and go over the shoulders to the backplate
large "bell" type shoulders
enclosed bicep armor
gaunts
armored gloves
kama and loincloth
cod plate (assumed)
thighs
knees
shins
boot

here are pix:

Mirdala Runi:
Ah, so that really does mean my mando is medium, not heavy...That is definitely clearer...

Chucko:
