Testing out painting
« on: Jan 21, 2010, 10:03 PM »
I decided to sort of test this video out, as well as testing out my new  air brush...

So here I'll be letting you know how it works for me.

Here's the piece in question...it will eventually (hopefully) become an elbow plate... you can still see the lines on it...

Here's both pieces, cut out. It was sort of hard to get them the same size without and exact-o knife, so I suggest using one...

Some plastic glue and a bit of tape later... Definitely  use either hot glue or crazy glue, as anything else is a pain in the neck. Also here's my assistant, trying to look innocent.

Will you be fiberglassing this then as well?

I used an air brush to put a silver coat on (I didn't have grey, but I prefer the silver anyways...) And here's the finished first coat. Unfortunately I'm going to have to let this dry over night before putting any more coats on...

Yep, but I still wanted to test out the video for myself... luckily I won't be doing this for the larger plates...I'd propably end up painted silver....my hands are already pretty bad ^_^¿

I just ask, any time I go to an ER or doctors 'Do you mind if I take a few pairs of exam gloves? I do a lot of painting and artistic projects, and can't ever find them"

9/10 times they won't care.

fiberglassing the cardboard will turn out some really nice fiberglass armor. however, it's quite labor intensive (i know i did a whole set that way lol). to help keep costs down, a much easier method is to buy a 33 gallon silver sterilte bin from walmart for 8.00. you can draw your templates onto it and cut them out with scissors. drop them in a pot of boiling water for a few seconds, shape them by hand and then a minute or two in the freezer to set them and youre good. i just finished building two new verd'ika sets using this method and theyre turning out nice.

I keep getting them from a Navy Doc, but I never end up using them...maybe I could send them to people who would use them?

And to A'den: My sister and I spent 3 months building a Aphonse cosplay...if you're not familiar with the character, just know that he's basicly a walking suit of medieval armor. We did the whole thing that way...as much hell as it was to make, we were super popular at the convention and that alone made the whole mess worth it...

yeah i put a wip, which is on hold currently, for my neo crusader armor. i built the whole set from posterboard, glassed it, bondo, sanded, bondo'd, sanded, bondo'd sanded, bondo'd sanded, glazing putty, sanded, glazing putty sanded... etc etc etc! by the time i was dine i'd had it! lol. ultimatly i opted to send it off for vacforming from styrene. i figured if i ever broke a piece i wasnt about to go through all that again.

I don't blame you. That's why I'm going to try out using a mannequin for the chest plates, and likely a couple other parts too....I noticed that a lot of Mandolorians don't have elbow plates...is there a specific reason for this?

Mobility....it messes up how you can move your arm.

Can't speak for others, but for me they impede movement, flexibility, and are a pain to make and secure to the outfit.
