just the dust, the trick is you need to use a coat or two of clear sealer over the top.

And keep a distance with your spray can or you will "spray away" the dust.  ;)  .You can also use some hairspray before applying the charcoal dust.

Other idea is liquid black shoe polish.

Put on, use a tissue to wipe it off again.

All the methods mentioned above are good.

Also might want to look at graphite. It has a bit more of a metallic look to it in the end though.

Also, most craft stores have the cheap craft acrylic paints, you can usually get a little bottle of black for 79 to 99 cents, depending on the store and which cheaper brands they carry. Actually I think the cheapest ones go down to 59 cents at my store, if I recall correctly. :)

This is my enemy's weapon. This is what I must defend against, destroy, or get around to get to my enemy.

Last time I bought black acrylic, I picked up a 10 oz bottle at Walmart for less than $.50.  As for weathering on the cheap, crushed graphite (lead from a pencil) and hairspray are good for carbon scoring and you can play around with it.  be warned, though, that's water soluble.
