Here's a close-up of the ab plate with the fluting on it.

I'll try to explain how I do this.  First I use my T square to find the center-line, then make a mark down the center .  Next use the dead bottom of the center line to make another strait line up to the top outside corners...giving it the nice V shape.  Then I put that on the anvil side of my beakhorn stake and crease it very lightly so I don't make dishing harder.  Then I dish the curve into it.

The next big step is putting the flute into the metal without shrinking the size of the plate.  To do this I use a cold chisel that I ground down and put a dull point (oxymoron) on for impressions only.  Then I open my vice to about 1/8inch, lay a piece of cloth over it and begin chiseling down the lines I made using the stake.  I make 3 passes with the chisel, then once thats done I put a flat sided stake into the vice and use a an old slagging hammer I modified to have a thin rounded polished head to give the fluting some structure and smooth out the sides.

So yeah it's that easy!!  =D

Have you thought about black parachute cord? that's what I used on my SCA lamellar and the lacing lasted longer than those small plates did

Mandalore the Uniter:
Thats a really good idea Zev, no I didn't think of that.

Everything can't be made of metal, but leather also has it's weaknesses...and holding together metal at a movement area is one of them.
