Can I have only one gauntlet?
« on: Oct 11, 2009, 10:08 AM »
Im curious if this is approvable. Im doing a Starkiller style Mando. Im trying for it to look mandalorian but still retain the look of starkiller. It hit me today, that I think it would look really good with only one gauntlet.

Can I be approved this way?

NOw, why would you want to have your cake and eat it too? Why not do a Mando and do Starkiller as seperate characters? Or, use the beskar'gam Starkiller wore as inspiration for your Mando? You'd need a helmet and to not be a Jedi/Sith-Mando of course.

If you wanted to use only one gauntlet, that COULD be approveable as long as the other arm had some type of covering. Please read the CRL's on Modern Era Mandalorians for complete details on the requirements. The thing is, if it looks silly or unMando when done and you apply with it, be prepared for it to require corrections to pass.

Honestly, while the idea is intersting, it may be trying to reinvent the wheel.

My advice:  Keep the requirements for approval in mind, and build it to them, then assemble the whole costume the way you want it.  It may pass in your initially preferred configuration, but if it doesn't, you've already finished the parts you need to bring it up to standards.  You also get the opportunity then to change how it's put together for every outing.  Adaptability is a very Mandalorian quality.  Just make sure that in your event-to-event changes you don't drop below standards.

Honestly, while the idea is intersting, it may be trying to reinvent the wheel.

While i'm no expert, i've found out in my own quest for armor the tribute/crossover/inspired by sets tend to stray a very fine line between re-invention and improvement of said wheel.. And I know myself how very easy it is to fall to the reinvention side..

My advice mirrors Orikads... Make the armor to CRL/approval status first, and then modfy it to fit your theme... It is a lot more hassle and a lot more likely to not work if you try and wiggle the guidelines to meet your theme, rather than your theme to the guidelines.

That said, I think done properly, this suit could have some awesome looking potential.. And last I saw, hand wraps/coverings were allowed.. That may be a good route... So, follow the advice given.. Check the CRLs, and modify your theme to fit within them without a bunch of stretching, and you're golden :D

Im such a dork. I appologize guys. I posted this question and then forgot to check the responses. Well as of tonight, minus the helmet, my mando is done. Ill post pics as soon as I can.

I think it looks awesome. But we will see if I can get approved.

Thanks for the advice.

Yes, get some pics posted up before you send out your app.  We can all look it over and see what we think and let you know if anything needs tweaked.

Well, having only one gaunt works.
My first application was with only the right gaunt, holding a weapon's system and a mp3-player, and a piece of leather covering my left forearm.
I got approved, so I don't know why it shouldn't work for you.
In case my approval was a mistake, and this doesn't work, I just want to note that I have a fully fledged gauntlet for the left side now.

I'm looking forward to seeing the pics of your armor. :)
Having one gauntlet would not be a problem as long as you also have some kind of armor or covering on the opposite arm.

Concerning crossovers, I have to put in my $.02 on the subject.  Crossover costumes will be one of the things that we will be looking at when the CRLs are updated, so please take this into consideration.

There is indeed a very fine line between influence and theme, and if you are wanting to use elements of Starkiller's costume for a Mando,  you need to be very cautions. I doubt there would be a problem with using his look as a source of inspiration, but if it is at all recognizable as a "Starkiller Mando", then it would be a crossover and you will have gone too far.
