My Trash Can Armor (OM!)
« on: Feb 05, 2009, 08:00 PM »
Hey, I'm Caroline or Ordeyn or CAN. I just started my Mando 'bout 2 weeks ago and here's what I've got:

Yes, it's guy armor, I know. That was my own fault.  But that's okay, shaping shouldn't be to hard with a little help from the oven.  ;D It'll be interesting.

CAN

P.S. The pic should be good now, sorry 'bout that!

Hey Ordeyn, you'll probably have to host your photos up on photobucket or something, as you need to be logged in to see images from the dented helmet...plus it's using up their bandwidth.

Hmm that looks pretty good, how did you do the shoulders? Find a trash can with the right size, or did you shape a flat piece to fit? I'm curious as I might use the same material depending on PVC Foamboard price vs size.

Everything is still unshaped. I have yet to get off my lazy shebs and work on it.  I used and oval shaped trash can, 8 gallons I believe, and it was only about 10 dollars at Wal-Mart. Hopefully the original shape combined with the shaping I'll do next will get 'em all nice and pretty.

The templates are located on the Mercs homepage...if you hit home up on the left of the toolbar, then look in the top left corner, you should see a tutorial/template link.

Looking good so far CAN, now get shaping young lady :P.

Ben: What do we do now? Lob a baradium missile at it?
Luke: Do we have a baradium missile?
Ben: Sorry, Uncle Han said it was always a good idea to have one--
Luke: Your uncle isn't a jedi. I wish you'd remember that.

Hehe, I promise to get some work done this weekend. I will be boiling the armor and shaping it that way. Wish me luck!

Good luck :D.
Also, fun fact, a blow-dryer works well for the little things, just like a heatgun, it just takes a little bit longer. I wouldn't use one to, say, shape a back plate, but for shoulders and knees and little details it works pretty well.

Ordeyn, dont know what your budget is like but i just picked up a heat gun at the home Depot last nite for 20 bucks. I am gonna use it for my shoulder bells, gaunts and shins. Keep up the good progress!!

Fighting the good fight since 2008 and still getting my shebs kicked...

Thank you for the luck  ;) Shaping went great.  ;D

Doesn't fit perfectly but its close enough for me. The boiling didn't take long either and it was very easy to shape the armor.

I'll be going into town tomorrow to look for paint primer, paints(maybe), bondo, and another trash can for the back armor if I can find one that'll work. Any primer's you guys prefer? Bondo? Stores? Any advice will be great, thanks!

Good to hear it went well, ner burc'ya :).
I stick with Rustoleum for all my spray-painting needs. It works well on both the metal and various plastic parts of my armor, including my buy'ce, but that's a personal preference. WalMart is always a Merc's best friend :P, and Lowes and Home Depot get a lot of business from us too. I spend more time in Lowes because it's closer to my house and they gave me a higher credit limit, but as far as I know, the prices are pretty well the same. Advice you'll get from more or less all of us is to paint in light coats. Don't cake it on and allow each coat to dry all the way before adding another. No need to rush things. ;D.

Yay, I'm back! (and hungry)  ;)

I bought some primer and randomly got a few strips of industrial strength Velcro for kicks (I'll use it some how). I'll prime the armor probably tomorrow and post picks! :D Now, to put some dents in that overly smooth plastic...
